Hey fellows, was just wondering what kind of velocity you guys are getting with a.308 and this powder. Normally use varget but looking for something that will meter better out of chargemaster. Heard good things but never used it. Is it temp sensitive? Any data or input would be great. Thanks

First, I have never had issue with how Varget meters thru the Chargemaster; especially once I did the McD straw mod.
Varget is my "go to" for 308. It gives me consistency, accuracy and velocity I can count on no matter the conditions. H4895 did not. Although I will admit I only tried it with heavier bullets like the 175 and 190.

Apples vs oranges....but....here we go. With 168 SMK....H4895, IMR 4064, IMR 4895 and Varget all great results. Prefer higher load density, go Varget or 4064. DO NOT forget that IMR 4064 has decades of solid performance.

I really like H4895 with moderate weight bullets like the 168g A-MAX out of my 24" 5R milspec. I've used both R&P and BMH brass with excellent results but had to reduce my load 0.9 grain from my IMR4895 accuracy load to hit the same node but at at a 15fps lower velocity. H4895 is temperature stable (IMR4895 is less so) and seems repeatable lot to lot. At 2710fps with H4895 I am hitting an OBT node and it is surprisingly easy to make very small groups.

Re: H4895 w/ 168 vlds in .308

I just tried H4895 in my 5R for the first time yesterday at the range and was pleased with the performance; I was using a 168 SMK. Hundred yard groups were close to 1/2 moa. For me, that's a gas.

The three loads I used and the average chrono speed were:

41 gr, 2586
42 gr, 2599
43 gr, 2682

Not quite the speeds YAOG mentions, but I was pretty conservative with the loads. To date I've pretty much been a Varget guy, but I'll play with H4895 more.

+83 FPS from 42.0 gr to 43.0 gr? I'm trying to comprehend that but find it difficult to believe.

My Hodgdon manual states 43.0 as being max for h4895 & 168 SMK. In Wnichester brass I went as high as 43.6 H4895. I don't detect any pressure signs up there, and it performs good out of my gasser but I'm still experimenting.
43.3 may be a good one. I'm using 168 Amax over it and BR-2 under it.
