Have you seen this type of powder thrower?

I picked this powder dispenser up today. Have any of you reloaders seen this? At least I think it is a powder dispenser.
The second picture is the glass window I would think to see the powder as it got low. It has a brass powder hopper.

All in all this is quiet intresting.

The name on it says Belding & Mull, Philipsburg,PA

Hope someone can shed some light.

It's a powder dispenser designed for black powder. That's why it got a brass (non-sparking) housing. The company went bust sometime around WWII or so.

There should be a drop tube that the powder is dispensed into. I set one up that I have the other day just for giggles and it was throwing within a 1/10th of a grain. They are known for being fairly consistent powder measures.

There is no tube with this one. I got a bunch of reloading equipt. and this thrower was in it. I dont know what I will do with it, But it is intriguing.

I basicly got the stuff for the rockchucker and powder thrower. It also came with a few dies.

As stated earlier, it is mainly for black powder. They are still popular enough that they sell rather quickly. MVA sells a new updated copy and they ain't cheap. Yes they typically use a drop tube. I believe that the MVA drop tubes will work with a B&M measure.

They will, of course, work with the newer white powder, but that stuff is just a fad!

I would keep it and try using it.They are still considered to be among the best of that type thrower.Pete

Had one and sold it to a friend. I've regretted it many times over. If you want to sell it put a price on it...I see them on EGay from $50 to $90 with the measuring device.

I was thinking somewhere around 100.00 bucks. Some I looked at on egay, some were pretty beat up for just under, with no tube. I do have some kind of measure with it. I just dont weigh out black powder.

The measure doesn't care what powder goes through it. They just put the brass hopper on it so it will be safe with black powder.

I do not want to argue, but I am not sure they were ever used for black powder. I think they came out in the 30's when it was about gone from the scene. I started with one and still have several. I like them for stick powder. Nice, consistant and fast.

Modern throwers use brass instead of plastic for static control. Before everything was made of plastic metal was the only game in town so you could have an early model thrower made of brass but sold in the smokeless era. Same as winchester metal powder cans before static resistant plastics.

I bought one in the early seventies it works very well with ball and flake type powders. the longer stick types not so well it tends to cut them.
