I am considering a VietNam-era M40 build by rebarreling a 22-250 varmint-weight barreled action (SN 262xxx). The preliminary plan is to rebarrel in 7.62 NATO with Douglas' close-to-spec varmint weight contour.

My question is what is the likelihood that the 22-250 takeoff barrel can then be screwed on a short action in the SN 6.2 million range (former 243 Win so good bolt face) w/o expensive re-headspacing/lathe work being required? Also, is it reasonable to expect good feeding of 7.62 NATO by previous 22-250 receiver.

I'm trying to keep my net costs low by selling the re-barreled SN 6.2 million/22-250.

Of course nobody knows until tried - just curious what the more educated guess would be.

Spin it on, chuck a gage in there, and see. Its the only way to know. But as Singleshot said, the action by itself is probably gonna fetch as much as the rifle.
