would there be any differnce in accuracy between a heavy barrel and a standard barrel in 308 i have a tc venture on order i thought it had a heavy barrel but looking at it, its a standard barrel, i dont plan on shooting 800 yds with it but i would like to go out to 300

Re: heavy vs standard barrels

If it's a target gun application- and you plan on sending a lot of lead downrange, a heavy barrel is often the best choice...although my son has a Savage .308 Hunter in a Choate stock that he uses for target. Sends 100 rounds downrange in a day's shooting (600-1000) and he does just fine with it...

Heavy barrels don't "whip" as much as factory contours, and don't change harmonics as much when they heat up from more rapid fire.

For a hunting rifle, where the cold bore shot is what counts- and you want lightweight to carry, factory contours are usually preferred.

Do a search, much discussion on "barrel harmonics"...

But like I said, IF this is a target gun, and IF you can cancel and change to a varmint or bull contour barrel, I'd do it.

Distance has nothing to do with it. Accuracy, is accuracy, at any distance.

Re: heavy vs standard barrels

its not for target practice but for coyote control, also what would be a good mill dot reticle for around 150 bucks something in a 4 or 6 power, i have a burris 3-9 on it now with the ballistic reticle havent had a chance to go to the range yet but if the 3-9 dont work for me i would like some options

Re: heavy vs standard barrels

Sounds like a factory barrel countour will work out fine. For the scope take a look in the optics section. I believe you can pick up a Bushnell Elite 10x with a mil dot reticle for about $150.00
