first of all this has been a great site. every time I google for info this is one of the top returns. I truly appreciate the info.
I didn't see a intro thread so I'll tell a little about myself before asking questions.
I'm a former Army guy with the 82nd turned Federal Agent. I'm a firearms instructor (hk p2000, m4, hk ump 40, rem 870)and love the sport of shooting. I grew up shooting rifles and shotguns. I really want to get into long range shooting and learning as much as I can.
I'm looking at pulling the trigger on a remmy sps tactical and here is the list I've started so far.I appreciate any opinions and feed back.
Remington 700 SPS Tactical 308Win Stock 554.00
Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist A5 393.27
Wyatt's Outdoor Detachable Magazine 239.95
Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 x 50mm 426245T 550.00
Harris Bipod Adjustable Height From 6"-9" HBR-S 65.00

Thanks for any help or direction.

Welcome to the hide fellow Texan. Looks like you have a pretty good list made up there so far. Just be sure to do a lot of research and ask as many questions as you can.

Build it and then shoot the living shit out of it.

Re: Hello from south Texas

Welcome to the Hide. Thank you for your service. The specs on your rifle looks good. I think it's a great way to get into long range precision shooting. The B&C stock is fine, I have one on my 243. I find that the LOP is a bit short, at least for me. I am not tall by any stretch of the imagination. I would consider the Manners stock as an alternative option, since the price is not that widely apart. Just a thought. Also, are you going to reload?

Re: Hello from south Texas

reloading would be my next step. I already have a wishlist on midway setup, lol. As I progress I would also like to build a 338, but first things first. Thanks for the Manners tip, definitely will look into it. Any cons or pros over the b&c? I went with the b&c because I didn't have the cash for a McMillan a5 and I read decent reviews about the b&c.

Re: Hello from south Texas

It's a fine stock for the money. For my stock, I had to experiment with Mr. Dremel a bit to get the action to sit flat on the stock. For a while there I was pulling my hair out because I couldn't figure out why my gun just wouldn't shoot like it used to. Perhaps a bedding job is in order to, at least for me, but being holding off on that. I am looking to get a Manners too. Looked into the McMillan A4, but after adding the inletting and the DBM, it's more expensive than the AICS, which I like a whole lot more. Like I said, if you know someone who has a B&C stock, I would try it out see how it fits you.

Re: Hello from south Texas

Looks like a good setup for the money spent. Get the reloading gear next, just a basic set. Handloads are going to pull the last bit of accuracy out of that combo, as well as saving you some money. It will really boost your confidence when your handloads shoot well. Keep us updated on your progress and welcome to the hide.

Re: Hello from south Texas

I also started w/ a Remington 700 SPS Tactical 308Win. Currently, I have a B& C A3 with only the bottom plate. No Wyatt's DB mag system because I know eventually I will be going to a something that takes AIAW Mags. This is the most common type among custom long range rifles. Even if you sell your rifle, you can keep the mags and use it on your next one. you can look here:

Re: Hello from south Texas

to look at he big picture.. I will start with 308 tac, but eventually want a 338 in an AICS 2.0. Right now I'm stretching the budget as much as I can.

So far this forum seems extremely helpful. sometimes these places can get real elitist when a fng shows up.

Re: Hello from south Texas

No I have not shot by San Antonio. Couple of ranges up to 300 here close to my house, but I have a farmer friend who has a natural backstop at about 1300-1400 yards across farm fields. Steel and paper. Still waiting to see a random hog downrange as we were asked to kill as many as we can when we are there....
