What caliber for the wife. she is a little thing so trying to limit the recoil when shooting in a match. thinking 223AI pushing 75amax or 6x47Lapua pushing 105 bergers. she is tired of watching me go to the range and wants to join it. as long as she has her OWN rifle.this will mainly be a plinking gun but she might try a fclass match. i have already ordered her stock. Her choice a mcmillan varmite 50%black 50%orange. i have a 223 action. sn107xxx on the action and i know that its not a true replica for the m40 but close enough that i dont know if i should be tearing into it. if need be i could sell this for a 308 bolt face. so really all i know is that i have a stock coming and need to decide caliber so i can get the rest coming. any help would be great.

Re: help deside wifes caliber

i think both are great choices , seems like the lapua would have an edge for the f class . i have tried the 223 /75 amax thing @ 1k , seems like it would be a frustrating way to start .

i have only shot 75amaxes out of my 22-250AI and that had no problem at 1000 but then again its going 3500fps. i have thought that same thing but i like the fact of cheap shelf ammo if i cant relaod fast enough for it. How fast are you guys shooting the 223AIs? the worst part is i would like a shorter barrel for when its suppressed(either round).

If it matters,
My wife has a 223AI and a 6XC. Loves both of them...
Shoots the 223AI more. She will notice a difference in recoil if the rifle is a hunting weight rifle...
My wife shoots the AI to 700 with little problem on a regular basis.

Make sure the stock and scope are set for HER...not you kinda her....

Good Luck

1+ on this. I would definitely go with the lapua.

ordered the stock with the intention of putting a sendero barrel in it. But maybe I will have to open it up if I go with the lapua because I think I will need more weight.

As for building it for her this is her all the way. She is making all the decisions except caliber. The stock is going to be 12 1/2in length of pull she wants it to have a badgerm5 because they look cool. Since I bought a new schmit and bender she wanted one so we got her a 4-16x42pmII. This is all hers in fact I don’t think she’s going to let me so load work.

Re: help deside wifes caliber

How about the 6x45, loaded with the 95 grain matchking (.450 BC) at close to 2700 FPS. Should pretty well duplicate the .308 168 grain SMK load.
No need to buy a new bolt, and you probably have plenty of .223 brass around. (they recommend commercial .223 brass, not 5.56)

savage 222.

thank you

Re: help deside wifes caliber

thats another idea but they wont let you use a break in a f class. if they would id let her use a supressor. so this must be a light recoiling rifle. with out being too heavy.

Re: help deside wifes caliber

My wife is very petite and doesn't like recoil at all. She really liked my 223AI chunk, but when the wind blows hard it made it difficult for her to hit stuff at range. Hard to get them to understand where to hold. My 243AI is pussy cat but for some reason she thinks it kicks too much.

If she can handle any recoil at all, go with a 6mm of some sort

Re: help deside wifes caliber

Depending on how far for the F-class, the 223 is a fantastic cartridge out to 600 yards. It is very fun to shoot, very accurate, very cheap, long barrel life. Plus you can get an AR if she wants a semi-auto and likes the looks. AI if you just have to be different, but the straight 223 is an easy answer. Get it with a 24"-26" barrel for those longer F-class matches.

Re: help deside wifes caliber

I would look at 6XC. Seems like it would be a great, low recoil, yet high performance round. It will get you all the way to 1000 and everything on the way there.

Re: help deside wifes caliber

When I was wanting my youngest to make the transition from .22LR to centerfire,I asked myself the same question.

The calibers were:

-.223 Rem.
-.223 AI
-6mm BR
-6 x 47 Lapua
-22/6mm Rem.
-22/250
-22 BR

I chose the .223 AI.

Now she is not ready yet.But she claimed ownership of my model 64MPR Anshutz 22LR. Its now called "My Brown Rifle".She turns 12 soon.Either way,she is actively involved in the shooting sports.

The rifle-M700 trued,Kreiger #17 Heavy Varmint taper barrel finished at 21 3/4" with Harrel's muzzle brake,Remington LTR stock.Harris bipod,Accushot monopod,Leupold 8.5-25 VX3 worked over by Premier Reticles a few years ago. I don't know the weight of this rifle. It shoots well.

While not a competitive rifle,I would not be hesitant to make repeated 1000 yard shots with it.There are better calibers to get the job done and not punishing at the same time.

-Good Luck

I shoot it in 20,21,22 and 24 inch 223AI's and if you see less than 3100fps in any of them,it's because you aren't gunning '335.

I'd never go longer than 22" again,if only because I've BT/DT.

OK, here's a thought. No brakes in F class, but how heavy can the rifle be? I've never shot F class (not for lack of wanting to), but everything is prone from a rest, right? Weight is a good recoil reducer, so a rifle as heavy as the class allows (with good balance) might let her shoot a competitive caliber without being turned off, which would be a bad thing.

Another idea: a 22/6mm Improved. I built one a year or so ago after it showed up in an issue of American Rifleman; shoots 80 grain bullets from a 26" 1:8" twist barrel at 3200 fps, 3/4 moa gun. Pushes the .224 bullets fast enough to compensate for the relatively low B.C.s and can resist the wind better than cartridge with .223 velocities; barrel life won't be great but everything seems to have tradeoffs.

Thats the ticket right there. My wife was real shy of bolt rifles until she shot my 6BR. We shoot right at 30grs on powder behind a 108 Berger.
