If you were to start from scratch and build a 300WM barrel for LR hunting and shooting. What would be your optimum barrel length, twist rate, and any special modifications to the chamber/throat?Keep in mind that nothing under a 185 Accubond will be used, and more likely bullets in the 210-240gr range. The barrel profile will be the same as a PSS or Sendero,as I want it light enough to pack it.Also thoughts on a brake that is easy to remove and replace as this rifle will be used with a suppressor sometimes.

If you want to reliably shoot the 240 grains bullets, you will most likely need the 1:9 twist at least. I have mine at 26" barrel MTU contour with flutted. Have a BO FTE brake on it. Love it.

Re: Help from 300WM Fans

Ron at Benchmark is doing the barrel, dropped off the rifle tonight,he can be done in two weeks. His opinion is that you can't overstabilize a bullet,at least the bigger ones in the 2600-2900fps range. He also suggested a longer throat,I forgot to measure Magazine length before I dropped it off.

Re: Help from 300WM Fans

Go with a 10 twist unless you plan on shooting the 240s exclusively. I have shot the 240s in my 10 twist 300WM without a problem also but I am betting you will end up shooting bullets in the 208-210 range for long range and the 10 twist will work just fine. I would go 26" also.

Re: Help from 300WM Fans

I have a 1 in 10, 26 in on all of my 300WM's. I just got the FTE installed on one not to long ago. It seems like it will work out pretty well.

The 1 in 10 seems to stabilize just about everything from the 175's up to the 240's.

Good luck.

Re: Help from 300WM Fans

If you are only using those for hunting it won't be a problem. But if you are using those for a prolonged range session you might want to drop it down a bit. But it still wouldn't be too awful if it was braked.

Re: Help from 300WM Fans

1:10 gives you flexibility. 1:9 may commit you to the heavier bullet, may not. My 1:11 seemed to like 200's more than 180's. Go figure. I have 1:10 now.

If you're considering custom modifications to the throat to accommodate the 240 keep in mind that there is a reasonable possibility that someone may develop a secant ogived bullet in the 220-230g range (is anybody listening?) and then you may be stuck with a really long throat or bullets seated way out in the neck. That 240 is REALLY long.

What is your magazine length and will you single load when not hunting?

The Holland brake has worked out very well on my 300WM. It recoils less than my sons .270 Win. In addition to 6 ports on the sides, there are 3 holes on the top which combat muzzle flip. It is very effective and there is little to no dust signature when prone.

Oh, forgot to add this earlier. For hunting, a 26" barrel (esp. w/ a brake added to that) feels like you're swinging a totem pole around the woods. The 22" barrel on my gun handles very nicely. I do give up a little velocity, not as much as you'd think, but a compromise between 22 and 26" I think would work for most.
