Hello, I need some help building a custom rifle that will be used for mainly long range hunting with some target shooting too. Almost a year ago I was pretty much settled on a build a but then was accepted to college an had to use the money for that instead. I have since graduated from college and back working. I would like some help with putting a build together for my needs. What I would like to finish up with is a large enough caliber to do the job with preferably no break so small enough not to need one. I'm pretty set on a 300. Win mag shooting 210-230 Berger vld's. I would like to keep this gun at a decent weight. Hopefully 12-13lbs or less. I picked up a nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50mm scope for the build before school. Right now I'm thinking about this for the rest of the build; remington 700 action blue printed or a stiller tac 300 (only other options are BAT or defiance), 26" #4-5 contour Broughton or Brux barrel (26" #4-5 to keep weight down), timney trigger, McMillian a3 stock in 60%black, 20%od 20% light tan and pillar bedded obviously.

Is there any suggestions, tweaks, changes, you guys have for this build. Any and all advice is appreciated.

I'm not really experienced in this area, but if you are looking at the 300 WM, have you considered the 7mm rem mag? You would likely get similar external ballistics but with less recoil (180 gr projectile vs 210-230gr). Might be worth considering unless you feel you need the bigger pills for what you will be shooting.

The reason I chose the 300 over the 7mm is litterally just Personal preference. I love the 30. Cals. Now I know there's no real upside to a 300 winny vs the 7mm mag but I don't mind. They'd both do the job. I'm not worried about recoil. The reason I stated that is because normally people suggest brakes for most builds and I don't really want one. I currently shoot a 7mm mag and a light weight 300. WSM which will both kick more then this build and I shoot them with ease.

I just realized that the first part of my earlier post says "I'm really experienced in this area...", it was however supposed to read "I'm not really experienced in this area..." I'll go back and edit that, but I thought I'd point that out and immortalize it on the internets with this post - I think it's hilarious at least, hopefully yall will get a laugh too. Trust me, I normally wouldn't say that about myself even in regards to areas in which I am very experienced lol. Anyhow, back to the OP, I just figured I'd throw the 7mm suggestion out there in case it was something you hadn't thought of - sounds like you pretty well know what you need/want. Should be a good rifle, get it built and post some pics so we can admire them.
