I have read Bryan Litz's book and have been calculating SGs and it seems that all the nosler and sierra bullets I have calculated SGs well below 1. Does anyone know a good bullet to use with a barrel with a 1:14 twist? I have a Remy 700VTR in 22-250.

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Nothing over about 62gr is going to stabilize in it. The 52 Amax is an excelletn bullet, as well as 52 Blitzking, 60 Vmax (I think that's the one) amongst many others.

If you really want to get the potential from that chamber have a 1:7 to 1:9 barrel spun on it so that you can shoot the 75-90gr bullets.

50V-Max is king in a 14".

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

I have had excellent results with Sierra 52 grain SMK's in my 22-250 also 60 grain Hornady Spire points. My 700 HB BDL has a 1:14 twist I believe.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

I've wore out more than one 14 twist in 22-250 with 55 Ballistic Tips.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

They're 14" and I've had more than a few.

The 50 'max will smoke those.

i shoot 55g thru my 700 bdl varmint 1-14

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

I have to ADD that I have had the BEST 'heaviest' bullet results in my 6BR with a 14-twist Hart . using 68-grn. Berger match flat-base . The flat-base also will go 'Way Past' 600 yrd. with accuracy. Try them.
.
edit to add:
I know your talking .22 cal. & I said I was using 68's in 6mm but different factory bullet shape is funny sometimes. For me, I would say 40 to the 52 grn. range in weight for 14-twist and accuracy . But I hear guys doing heavy 70+ grn. in .223 with 9-twist . So you never know till you give it some work .

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

My Remy VS handles the 52gr Berger and 55 V-Max very well with it's 26" 1-14twist

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

52 smk for accuracy, 52 Amax target/varmint
55 nos bt pure varmint.
All excellent accuracy really.
I have used these for years, but never had much luck over 55 grn in my
factory sako 75 1-14"

giles.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

thanks for the responses - i ordered the berger 50, 52 and 55 - will give them all a try.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

My fave for the 250 and the swift is a 53 smk, they shoot great and always seem to be the cheapest. I remember buying them at walmart for 11.50 a box, those days are gone, but they still make a hell of a mess out of prairie dogs.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

Currently shooting 52gr Berger Match Varmint out of my Remington 22-250 with 1-14" twist. My gun really likes them in front of 38.0 grns of H380.

I would think any bullet between 50-55 grain would work for you. You will be happy with the bergers.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

I run the 52g SMKs and have had excellent results in all the '250s I have owned. I once tried some Bergers, but I was just putting more money down the tube with the same results. Note that all these were factory rifles.

Re: Help with bullets for a 22-250 with 1:14 twist

When you see so many satisfied with their bullet and thinking it the best, it tells you how great the .22-250 is. But we all knew that. I like the Sierra 55 gr BT. Shot thousands of them. They stablize in the 14 twist barrels to 450 great and fair to 550. At 600 and beyond, the groups open up and I attribute this to the twist. I just purchased two Bartlien 12 twist barrels for the longer ranges. JMO
