Alright, so I would like a long range setup for fun and a local gun auction has a remington 700 40x in 7mm rem mag and I was curious if this is a good starter? Also, anyone know a value of a rifle like this? From what I read, its a good caliber and setup, but figured I would get expert advice.... It has a leupold vari x 3 in 6-20 on it also so I thought I may try and purchase.....

Nope, magnums of any kind make poor starter rifles. Go with a .308 or .223 to "start" with. You'll be able to shoot it more.
