I bought a set of Burris XTR rings for my Rock River AR. The rings have a round bar with a flat milled into to engage the rail for recoil. If I read the directions to mount the rings it says to mount with the nut for the clamp on the left. To me, left on the firearm is from looking at it from the back, so left is opposite the ejection port. If I do that, the round part of the recoil lug will contact back of the rail, the milled flat will contact the front.

I believe they do this because recoil moves the rifle backwards and then the flat is solid to the front of the rail groove.
