Recently at a basic rifle marksmanship training course in Arizona, I heard an instructor say that no manufacturer made an effective adjustable cheekpiece. Also that it was difficult/impossible to shoot without something that fit the shooter properly. While I understand a part of this I'm left with the question, How did any sniper in WWII, Vietnam, Korea, etc. ever kill the bad guys?
I jest but seriously my mcmillan a3-5 fits me very nicely. Does anyone else have problems finding stocks to fit or is it just him?

Re: How did they ever survive???

I'm no bad ass marksman by any means, but I think a real marksman/shooter should probably be able to pull off some shots no matter what he's got. The M40 stocks didn't have a high cheek weld and those boys were gtg...

Not that it's impossible w/o a perfect stock, but it may not be as "easy"...

Re: How did they ever survive???

You know you can make a nice cheekpiece with some cloth and tape right?

It's not like you can't shoot without it. Lol

Re: How did they ever survive???

LOL.

you gotta make whatever you have work. strips of kneepads the army ACUS have actually worked well for me when I needed to make something. it was solid, but not harsh.

He was/is wrong. Many rifles can be had with perfectly functional adjustable cheek pieces.

Adapt and Overcome. Tape, foam, wood, screws, etc.

Re: How did they ever survive???

It's the "old school" vs "new school" thought process. Back in the day, the shooters did more with less. Now a days, you need a $5,000 rifle with $3,000 glass to be competent. Best thing to do is make your own path unless someone else's path has a lot of truth to the madness.

Re: How did they ever survive???

Completely agree. Shooters from 50+ yrs ago did so with much less of the technology and equipment. It's all about adapting and performing with what you have. You make it work.

Let your bullets do the talking.

But I don't see any reason why you can't shoot 1 MOA or better with a random person's - non fitted gun assuming the gun and ammo are capable.

Are you going to be better with your own equipment? Of course, but 1 MOA is more than enough for most of the shots.

Anyone see that 80 something year old sniper on Impossible Shots? Hasn't touched a rifle in years and shoots roughly 1/2 MOA at 1000 yards? Some people are just bad asses. :p
