I picked up a couple rifles from an estate sell last week and one of them is a rem 700, a serial number and the stock looks like a smear stock. Really only reason I bought it as I have no need for another .308

I'll try to get a picture of it posted here tomorrow and maybe someone can give me some info.

Thanks
Andy

Forgive me, I'm not familiar with that term- what's a "smear" stock?

I have a USMC "SMEAR" return stock as well. I have not built on it yet but I plan to. I contacted McMillan to get information on the stock. This is what I received.
"The early so called “smear” patterns were made with the old semi-translucent dye based color concentrates and were only produced for about the first two years of production, from about 1974 thru 1976 (about 200 stocks). Then the more opaque milled color concentrates became available in about 1977 and all the subsequent stocks thru the early 1990’s were made with them ( about 800 stocks). The camo pattern is the “Forest Camo” color, not the Woodland camo.
Regards, McMillans"

These stocks are definately a piece of history.
S/F,

I was curious myself.

The best way I can describe a Mcmillan smear stock is, take a look at the regular woodland camo pattern that they produce and imagine that the patterns are spread out and "smeared on". Also, take a look at the M-40 A1 picture thread. There youll find some smear patterns, once you identify one, they are hard to miss.

Thanks, this place is a wealth of info.

So are they a rare mistake or something , like an upside down airplane stamp or something? Or is it a military thing?
