The barrel had never been removed on my High Standard pistol. Have had the pistol since 1978. I could not push hard enough on the barrel release to make it move. Was able to use a rubber mallet on the button and got it to go in so that I could remove the barrel. Used WD-40 and worked the button a lot. Put barrel back on and took to the range. After I came back, tried to remove the barrel again and the button is still too tight to move with my thumb.
Any suggestions for working on this?

Check for burrs, properly grease (WD40 is not grease) and be careful what you ask for. I'll take a tight lock-up on a target pistol over a loose fit every time.

High Standards will always tighten as you shoot them.

The dismount technique to press in the button is to push in on a hard, non-mar surface (say the edge of a wooden work bench).

As psoted above a light, white grease can help. WD-40 can lacquer up and harden over time.

Re: HS Supermatic Trophy Barrel Release Tight

I was only using the WD-40 to try to get it to break free. As you mentioned, WD-40 is a penetrant, and I need a lubricant. I then used a gun lubricant on those parts. But I will work on this again. The work bench is a good idea. My thumb just is not strong enough. I just wondered if I was dumb or something for having trouble getting the barrel off.
