Got the dreaded call from verify by visa of possible fraudulent charges on my debit card account. One of the pending transactions ($774) had a phone number in the description. After canceling my card, I called the place, waded through customer service folks to accounting, and gave my card number for the order just placed.
They were able to find the transaction, and I asked them to confirm the shipping address for the shipment.
So, the question is- phone call to local pd, southwest airlines flight and in person visit to the local pd for a ride along, lots of packages of dog shit, rotten fish, c.o.d. magazine subscriptions, or... what would you do.
Charges also included escort services, omaha steaks order, etc.

Put that phone number into a bunch of online health insurance marketplaces. Their phone won’t stop ringing for months. Enter to it to win free cruises, etc.

As far as I can tell you aren’t out any actually money. Not worth my time to fly anywhere that’s for damn sure.

While the addressee may have been involved it was likely in a peripheral way. I am not in any way excusing their actions. Sadly a lot of dim witted people fall for various "work from home" schemes as "re-shippers". The use what I'd hope are unknown to them stolen credit cards and purchase goods which are then re-sold on eBay and other sites. They usually get a cut or any applied coupons or discounts as payment. Both sides of this fall into the "if it sounds too good to be true it usually is" camp.

Box of glitter, preferably spring loaded. Or use their name/address/phone number to order a few Scientology books, selecting that “you would like to learn more”, ensuring years worth of outreach.

Sometimes they will use another persons address. They will tracking the package to see when it will be delivered, wait for delivery, then swoop up the package. Or if the homeowner receives the package the person will knock on the door and say a package was delivered to the address by accident, provide the name that would be on the package, then take possession of it.

That way when the cops come knocking, the case goes cold until they figure out who the person was that picked up the package.

If you have the address it was supposed to be shipped to I would go on google maps see if you can get a ground view and maybe the color of the house or front door then call the number (record the conversation) act like you are from the shipping company. Tell them the reason you are calling is because of a lot of lost packages recently that we ask the color of the house or front door just so the driver can more easily identify the correct house. If they can't give an immediate answer without thinking about it then it probably isn't their house.

Lots of other options on the site too

Sucks the CC companies wont go after these fraudsters until the $ amount gets way up there.

Thought is its a "victimless crime" but facts are we all pay for this leakage in higher prices and higher interest rates.

Every single one should be nailed and forced to pay restitution.

I’ve had my debit card to my bank account get compromised a few times. Each time it has happened they have had the money back in my account within 24 hours, but they do not go after the scum bags. I do not use my debit card hardly ever I mostly use credit cards and then pay those off at the end of the month.

I get the idea that I'm the only person in America without a debit card. Anyone else NOT have one?
PS. I bookmarked the exploding dicks package, one of my "friends" will get it.

Let it go, there is nothing you are going to do that is going to matter.
or

as for Debit cards, I see why some people have a use for them (bad credit, or unable to control spending with credit) but I do not see a benefit to having direct access to my cash in my account vs running everything through a credit card and paying it off every month.

I will also say that I had many credit cards compromised over the years, at some point (a decade ago at least) I stopped using credit cards in restaurants, the theft level went down significantly. instead of having an issue at least once a year, went down to maybe once every 5 years. Not very scientific, but I usually pay cash going out to eat

I would see if I could find any peace officers here on this site that are in your area. At least maybe have some officers on this site reach out to those officers in your area...

Have the officers randomly showing up at turds address... Any vehicle that is there get a plate number... It gets put in the fuk you system.

Or

Find some hackers that can associate the IP address from that physical address with child porn... then an anonymous call to the appropriate law enforcement agency

I had some credit card scammers order a cell phone at a Walmart in another state. We got a call from the credit card company asking us about the purchase and we said it was not us . They shut the card down .
So a week later , We get a card from fed ex about a missed delivery . The package is at a fed ex Walgreens location.
Went to Walgreens and picked up the package . It was the cell phone . The info on the shipping label was a mix of my info and some other stuff. There was a phone number for TX on the label . Googled the TX phone number and a bunch of hits came up that it was well known scammer number .
I call fed ex and talk to their fraud dept. Someone had set up a Fed ex account in my name .
The fraud dept. Shut down that account and recommended that I set up a new account , so no one could use my info .

We ended up with the phone and sent a letter to the credit card company . Explaining the attempted cell phone scam purchase .
They sent us a form and we filled it out . Along with a letter asking what we should do with the cell phone ?
They never responded and we still have the cell phone .

So your scammers and the people at that address could have no connection at all .

True, from my experience the scammer will pick an innocent persons identity to pose as and have the item delivered to the innocent persons address and be there to intercept the package.

It sucks. And even worse is it seems to be more about the credit companies being the front line instead of the police. I've had credit cards compromised a few times over the last decade. The CC companies were always quick to make things right. Relying on law enforcement to act is a headache. The one time I went to NCIS to report it, I was treated like I was the criminal instead of giving them more evidence to support the case. The third country nationals (TCNs) on that base run the NEX and the MWR facilities (mainly the restruants and bars) and CC numbers get lifted all the time. The base MAs are not equipped to handle CC crimes, and NCIS will not get involved unless a single transaction goes above a certain dollar value. So the TCNs keep stealing from troops and no one is willing to stop it. Even when I went to a strict cash only except for three spots, I have caught them trying to cheat me on the change back.

Some of the hackers are pretty smart and banks are not that smart from my experience.
My CC has been compromised 4 times in the last 3 years. The first time I had the fucker Red handed. Just happened to log in and check my account about 10 minutes after some asshole purchased 3 sets of high end headphones from a Best Buy in my state for pick up. I called Best Buy Manager and said it was fraudulent/do not release, then called PD and gave them all the info. Best Buy agreed to notify PD when some one showed to pick up. PD said yeah we don't bother with these cases (seriously). I tried to convince them & laid out the case that it was all cued up for them, a slam dunk. The officer I spoke with was a good guy and was honest to the point he'd have probably gotten in trouble if his superiors new what he'd told me. Bottom line is they (meaning those that set policy priority) don't give a flying fuck about CC type cyber crime (at least in my AO).

I had one scammer that called me & impersonated the CC fraud department. Said my CC was compromised. The impressive part was that the number he called from on caller ID was the actual number for the fraud dept on the back of my CC. I new he was full of shit when he couldn't tell me any details & asked for my online banking login. Yeah you can go right ahead and eat a bag of dicks you fucking scammer!!

Now here's my gripe with the banks. Each time they've replaced my card they only change the last 4 digits, same exp date. So if a scammer can mirror the banks own fraud number do they really think they don't know this and with the first 12 #'s, name, & exp can't crack a 4 digit code or even easier the 3 digit security code??? I suspect they can.

If they are smart, the address you have is simply a package forwarding location.
If so, the person receiving and forwarding the packages probably has no knowledge of what is going on other than get packages, relabel and then ship.

My AMEX got lit up for around $80K a few years ago. Amazing how poors spend money - most of it was target, k-mart, etc. It wasnt until a couple of days before I spotted the activity that they upped their game and shopped somewhere decent. Charges were removed without question by AMEX but never heard if they went after the cockroaches.

Do us a favor and go visit. After he is beheaded send cases of your shit weekly to kill the smell

The worst incident I ever had with a fraudulent credit card charge was one of my wife's cards, I forget the exact rewards program she had signed up for, but the issuing bank was synchrony bank

Her MF'in credit card number was stolen 3 times in a row immediately after a new card was issued.
Fraud 1 - she saw random charges on the card, called, had card cancelled and charges removed
Fraud 2 was 2 days after the new replacement card with new number showed up, again she called and got charges removed and got a new card

Fraud 3 we decided NOT to call the phone number to activate the card and just let it sit for a week or so inactivated (we have other cards, didn't need to use this one)

Well fuck me if the 3rd brand new card that was NEVER ACTIVATED got fraudulent charges on it
and here is why I will never do business with synchrony bank ever again. They accused us of pulling a scam on them by buying stuff and claiming fraud on 3 cards.

This one took a letter to the CEO to clear up. They still never answered me as to how they let a new un-activated card was authorized to make purchases

I have a fucking guess, someone in their bank was the one using our card for fraud and doing it in such a way that it made us look like the fraudsters. After a few words with the CEO customer service person, they agreed to cancel and close the account and a freeze so that no one could open an account in our name / SSN again at their bank.

Because there is almost no attempt to hold fraudsters accountable for CC fraud, it's a huge problem.

In my opinion the basis of so much financial fraud is it's based on basically, you rock up claim you have permission from the account holder to take said money and financial institution hands it over and it's up to the account holder to actually check to see if the financial institution is handing their money to fraudsters.

In this day and age where everyone is for the most part online linked all the time, there is no reason we can't go to a system where money is not transferred to a requester UNTIL the account holder positively initiates it. Other places like China have similar setups where when you go to pay, the store sends a payment request to you and then you initiate the payment to them.

If you were to do this with credit cards, debit cards & checks, a huge amount of fraud would vanish.

Muslim world never really stopped doing public dealings with criminals.
Chinese don't mind a bit of public executions either.

It's mostly all these westerners that went all soft and squishy.

But if you have to be all soft and squishy, if you were to actually force the criminal to work to pay back the actual victim + a bit extra for their trouble like was in the old Mosaic law (if it wasn't a death penalty offense), I'm pretty sure people might think twice about re-offending after they just finished forced labour term to pay off the last thing they did.

Exactly the reason people askin for USPS money orders with tracking is about the biggest red flag they would throw

I'm not sure where your opinion of debit cards comes from.........I carry two cards, AMEX, and a debit card, my credit score, which was ran on Monday is 850...........a debit card is an easy way to pay for gas, food, etc...........and I don't have to write a check at the end of the month..........

My opinion comes from the fact that I get points and rewards on my credit cards and I pay them off every month. (I also get to use other people's money for free, mostly for 30 days, but I have a 45 day billing on one card)

Why risk having your cash stolen when fraud is so high. If your credit is stolen its just easier to deal with.

Also had a family member had a debit card stolen, therefore cash stolen, and their house payment bounced as it hit all on the same day before anything could be fixed. Yes they eventually fixed it, but what a waste of time and effort.

You can live your life however you want, I chose to use credit cards for a lot of reasons and there is ZERO advantage to using a debit card instead.

I click on an electronic payment once a month and do not write checks. You can choose to continue to write checks if you want :)

For an update, I got an address. Called and spoke to the local pd there, and at first they we're a little "Thats too bad, its not really our division but we'll try to look into it." After awhile talking with them, talking about all the b.s going on in the world, and with what they have to deal with, I got a solid contact and follow up time they will get back to me. They did Emphatically ask me NOT to book a flight or make contact, and I told them I'd look forward to getting updated so I don't need to.
A spring loaded cat shit glitter dildo blast bomb does have a certain elegant appeal in this situation however.

Some shitheads got my mom’s credit card number a couple years back at Christmas and ordered a bunch of stuff from target that was sent to the house in AZ. They also got $500 worth of gift cards that were used at a store in Michigan. The credit card company said that was a common scam of sending merchandise to make the order look legit while really stealing the online gift cards. When we found the fraud I called Target and asked them how I went about returning the items. They said to just keep them, I insisted and they finally sent a call tag for the $90 item.

I’m used to getting a new card about twice per year. I had a new credit card get scammed in the first three uses last year. A gas station, a parking meter, and Home Depot. I definitely agree with the advise above about only paying cash at restaurants.

Nope, your not the only one. I don’t have a debit card or an ATM card. I use a credit card to pay for almost everything and pay it off at the end of each month. I don’t even pay bills online. We still write checks and send them in stamped envelopes.
Screw that giving everybody access to your banking accounts.
