Ok, guys. I am looking for some imagination and serious ideas.

Let's say I gave to you, a M40 (wood stock and all), told you this is the rifle you are going to use, you can not change the stock. You can only up grade (and you HAVE to upgrade) the optics (base, rings, and optic), you have the option to upgrade the BDL also.

Keeping it as an 100% authentic or repro is not an option, except for the stock and barreled action. What would you do to for this rifle to perform under pressure and withstand being put through the ringer (rugged use, comp., LE/Mil work).

I am looking for serious answers and legit answers. Functional, practical, and tuff, yet clean compact lines.

Grammar Nazi says "bored" not "board." It is Monday and that was my asshole comment for the day.

    Trigger job.

Go over that stock really well as far as sealing the bedding and/or barrel channel. Pillar bedding would be a good idea, but the main goal is to make the stock as impervious to moisture as possible.

Get a GOOD pic rail scope mount with 20 MOA of elevation built in, and mount and bed it to the receiver - consider going to 8/40 screws so that any alignment issues can be dealt with when opening up the existing holes.

Check the crown for burrs - remove/re-crown if needed.

If you reload, lay in a good supply of components and start load development. If you don't reload..., start.

Go to Rifles Only website to the TAB Gear store and order a sling. Front and rear bags are a good idea - use a Hide supporter like Redman or others.

Optics? The best you can afford that fit your criteria.

    Shoot, reload, repeat.

Get a PTG Steel BDL TGuard, Install 7075 Pillars, Bed the stock. Add Badger base and rings, and install a USO, S&B, or Nightforce scope. (whichever flavor suits you)

Tune Triger to a crisp 2.5 pounds

When bedding the stock make sure the action sits on top of the pillars and relieve any wood so that the action is only in contact with the pillars. Then Bed in Marinetex.

This setup should ring out the best in that old M-40.

    LOL, It is Monday.

OK, Trigger and stock worked over, action tuned, barrel cut and re-crowned. Go from here......Bolt knob, Bottom metal, Optics pacakge, let's say in the 2 grand range for base rings and optic....?

    2k for optics?

There a lot of great deals out there right now for 2k. Do you shoot in MILs or MOA?

For 2k I'd say to order a USO EXACTLY how YOU want it.
