I have someone offering up a CZ550 in 6.5x55 as part of a potential trade. I have no clue when it comes to this round. I did check a couple of ammunition sites to see about the price of ammo, and the one thing that bothered me was they were all out of stock. Anyway, it is a beautiful rifle. The person who has it tells me it is a great cartridge with minimal recoil and a very long rage. Educate me...........

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

Every Swede that shoots cannot be wrong!

Maybe they're out of stock because it is popular?

A buddy of mine was working in SA as a game guide and 6.5x55 is his second favourite cartridge. .243 is his favourite. This was plains game, but he shot a hell of a lot.

Popular in the UK as well.

Similar ballistics to .260rem, but slightly larger case. factory ammo loaded down due to old weaker actions. New CZ action, should be no prob with action strength, so you might be able to better .260Rem, but procede with caution!!

I'd take it, I don't think you'd be dissapointed.

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

6.5x55 is one of those great cartridges that will never die. It has been around forever and for good reason. Hell the Swish have used it as a moose round. I would most certainly snatch that thing up in a heart beat.

One other plus over a 260 Rem is that you can get Lapua brass for it.

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

How far can you see? I have shot a box stock CZ 550 in 6.5 Swede out to 500 easily (really big targets) and the Scandinavians shoot the round in match trim out to 1K with no worries. Handloading VLD bullets and standing on the load is no problem in a modern action like the CZ. The set trigger also facilitates good shooting.

Recoil is comparable to a .308 - assuming same weight of rifle, etc.

Lapua makes match grade brass.

If there is a drawback, it is that it is a long action round.

Easy to like The Swede.

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

I will share my quandary with you.

My end of the trade would be a Noveske N4 with a Daniel Defense Omega Rail on it.

His end would be a CZ 452 in .22 mag with an Intensity 6-20x44 scope and a CZ 550 in 6.5 with my choice of a NIB Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 or Leupy 1.5-7x33 scope. He has about $2100 in his two guns, I have about $1850.

While I the CZs are absolutely beautiful, not to mention top quality rifles, I cannot make up my mind whether I want to get rid of my M4. It's making my head hurt!

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

I can sympathize with your possible trade. While the CZ's are not my cup of tea, it is interesting ain't it?

I bet there are some that don't like the 6.5 Swede, but they just don't say it out loud

.

If you handload, the ammo ain't a problem, but you knew that. If you don't, most of the stuff you will find is downloaded because of all the 96's out there, but you probably knew that too. I used some PMC 139 grain a long time ago and it was warmer than the Federal Premium 140's I had. Seems that the Norma was warmer too. That's just me going off of memory.

To me the needing a long action thing is not a bother and there are some top quality components available for handloading.

Depends on how much you love that Noveske. Hell, go climb the fence @ Daniel and grab one of their M4's and.....

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

Norma offers 'traditional' 6,5 ammo 156grn bullets at 2560fps (from 24" barrel) and Nosler 140grn partition at 2690fps and a 120grn at 2820fps.These are all low pressure rounds for use in the model 94 Mauser and Krag Jorgsen rifles that are still very popular throughout scandinavia.

They also offer a modern loading of 130grn @2990fps for use in model 1900 rifles or newer.

In Sweden, Norway and Finland the 6,5 x55 is more popular for moose than 30-06, .308 etc

Re: Info On 6.5x55?

If in dire needs I´ll front you some brass,

both Norma and lapua brass is GTG in this cal, the norma will have a bit more room but have weaker primerpockets.

A 6,5x55 will do great work all the way out and beyound 1000 yards.

What Don says is correct, the 6,5 will take about 1/3 of all moose taken during every year,

the rest 2/3 are taken mostly with 308/30-06/9,3x62/x57/8x57/ and some others, 300 Winnies are popular in some places and I for one will use a 9,3x74R in a double given the chance.

Best regards Chris
