I built mine on a short action also. I made a single shot out of it too. The 284 is a nice fit for the short action. I can still remove the loaded round without having to remove the bolt although it is close with the AMAX with a 168MK there is no problem at all.

Don't know if the 284 is the all around comp gun answer. Having one built on a Bighorn LA.
