I did see the video a couple of weeks ago of uke drones dropping chems on Russian troops that were in a small, water filled ditch or creek. I recall that I even commented something to the effect of "gee, I wonder where they got those from"..........

I believe they are trying to keep these natural resources. Red arrow points to Bakhmuts location. Governments can make a lot of money selling drilling leases to foreign oil companies. Not the entire reason but part of the puzzle.
Part of the reason Nord stream was blown up is because it bypassed many hands who lost control over the land based pipeline and the ability to make money off of it. Many people got rich off these routes and Nord was going to kill their cash cow. Russian hydrocarbon energy is still flowing into Europe btw, through land based pipelines.
