so im fairly new to shooting very long ranges..anywho im thinking about shooting a quarter taped to a target at 550 yds..anyone ever do it or do it regularly? i have no problem popping clay pigeons at that distance so thTs what led me to the quarter idea..it will be with a. 308

Re: is this realistic?

I agree with JFComfort, it would be really hard to see it at 500+ even with high power optics. I have shot quarters and bottlecaps at 150-200 with a 17hmr, but not consistently, and it was hard to see with a 6.5-20x50 vortex viper.

Re: is this realistic?

i have a millet scope..i agree i probably wont be able to see the quarter either but i was gonna use a peice of blue tape to hold it up so im almost positive ill be able to see that

Re: is this realistic?

I would suggest placing the quarter in the center of a target that has something like a 3" red circle at the center. If the quarter is exactly in the center, it will definitely give you an aimpoint, even if you can't see the quarter. With a lot of luck, it may give you enough contrast to actually see the quarter. Let us know how it goes (pics would be nice if you drill a hole in it!).
