• Watch Out for Scammers!

We've now added a color code for all accounts. Orange accounts are new members, Blue are full members, and Green are Supporters. If you get a message about a sale from an orange account, make sure you pay attention before sending any money!

It's gonna get busier here,

"Mods are not a paid position but there are perks......."
Top perk is you won't get banned!
;)
I remember when I first came to SH. It was Dodge City!
Newbies had to have a tough skin. Especially with Larry and a couple other characters looking for every little slip up you might make.
@lowlight has it more like a love-in now.
Believe me when I say now is much better than then.
BTW, I have zero Mod skills and have gotten too lazy to care about any J-O-B since I retired.
It really is a big change from when I started, I miss the Shankster. Not the pics he posted but he was one of a kind

Fools, back then we had maybe 10,000 members, then 25,000 members, in the beginning when I first hit the radar we had 2500 members.

Now we have 150,000 big different between grab-assing with 10,000 people where maybe 10% were talking, and 150,000 with the same 10% talking, it's a numbers game

You cannot go backward, you cannot get away with the things we did then, no way can you repeat them today

This nostalgia is silly, Shankster was fun, but he was a troll, imagine him trolling threads now like that, it would become a zoo worst than today.

I think the level of discussion OVERALL is better today than ever before. In the past guys looked to a small handful of experts, today we have just as much knowledge with 10x more people participating who also possess the same level of knowledge. You all get butthurt over one person being wrong on things, combine that with 10 Shanksters because that is what you would get. You increase the Lindy Sisk(s) you also increase the Shanksters many would not be half as artful

You guys only see one side, if you saw both you would run from this thinking

True. I cannot remember when SH officially came on the airwaves but I know I've been here a long time.

This epic growth is not coincidence. You worked hard at making it happen. The 10% talking now is way more than total membership when I joined in.

In a way, I think we have gone backward but certainly not in a bad way. PRS, smart phone ballistics and other factors created the boon in membership here, the booming industry providing innovation (and gadgets) to the throngs of "newbies" and veteran blaster alike. The new members come with questions. Many questions the "old guys" see and shake their heads. But we need to be patient and answer those questions like we are talking to someone who hasn't been there and done that. At least that is how I see it.

This nostalgia is silly, Shankster was fun, but he was a troll, imagine him trolling threads now like that, it would become a zoo worst than today.
A troll yes but he took a lot of kidding over the years and was generally good natured about it. Maybe because I didn't know how many times he reported someone to you.

Experts? There were early days when I thought everyone was an expert. At least they thought so. But I learned who was honest and who was BS. That is no different today. Some guys get butthurt when they are proven wrong. I've been proven wrong many times and, in the end, was glad to learn from it. Absolutely no doubt that discussion is better today. We have outgrown the Shanksters and Army Jerrys. Larry's (Nobody) intelligence and life experiences were/are real and he spoke fact instead of fiction. He just never learned he could teach without being a gigantic asshole. That didn't fly here then and it certainly won't now.

You guys only see one side, if you saw both you would run from this thinking
My thinking? I spoke nostalgic. That was all. Kinda like writing "I was here" on the bathroom wall. It is better here now. At least from my side of the screen. I would say thank you but people would think I was sucking up.

I’ll have a lot of time until about April through September. I’ll still have time then but only in the morning evenings and weekends.

There are two groups of people whom I have all the sympathy for in the world. They are moderators on a bulletin board and HOA Presidents. Both are among the most thankless jobs in the world. In a lot of cases, you just cannot win. I know this because I am currently wearing both hats and see it way to often. LOL!

You won't find me giving any love to any HOA or anyone for being a part of it.

Which ones? The ones that gave us fdr and a big jump on Socialism? The ones that partied while the swamp was growing or actively participated in voting for more big gov? The ones that’s gave us 34,68,86? The ones that vote straight dem “cause republicans gonna take muh SS away? The ones that gave the country away and turned it into a socialist banana republic and blame it all on the “younger generations”?

No, the ones that fought WW2. The ones who left for Europe, never knowing when they would return, if they would return. Those gentlemen. The ones also who have earned every fucking penny of their SS. Thos greatest generational people.

Idk, there are a lot of us that got involuntarily called up for OIF 1. Our orders didn’t have an end date; in fact they were for OEF, because OIF hadn’t even been named yet. Not comparing this generation to the WWII generation, but don’t be so quick to write off those of the younger generation either (and I’m no spring chicken).

Thanks for the site lowlight! Great info and people here!

I'm a little surprised how many masochists we have here... volunteering to be mods.

<---- Not this cat. My lack of patience with whining or stupid would have me hitting the ban button so quickly we would be back down to 10,000 members in no time.

The War of Constitutional Restoration may be well under way by then... Which brings up an interesting dilemma... When a Patriot regular army unit takes back a town or a city, what are they going to do with all the abortion proponents and providers that are going to be captured too??? They are not really active combatants and they are definitely not noncombatant civilians... Hmm... I guess the same group as spies, saboteurs, and terrorists then... Good. Do we have enough carpenters and lumbermen in our ranks?
Treat 'em like the torries and loyalists after the revolutionary war. Hang 'em or ship them out of the country, maybe to one of their socialist utopias.

Good greif. First it was. We need a Coke machine. Then it was. We need a popcorn machine, (some of you bastards wore that thing out and didn't pitch in a dime for the new one). Now it's a freaking snow cone machine? What's next? Cotton candy?
Sheesh?!!
Hot dang!
Does this mean we are getting a snow cone machine for the break room?

Add to that a foosball table and a galaga retro arcade machine...

you can moderate the “how to do a mag dump at a junk car” threads.

You know you loved it and if anyone has never had the pleasure of spending six hours with thousands of rounds of 9mm and an HK MP5, select-fire...shooting up whatever was available to shoot....more's the pity.

Moderating takes a lot of things. A lot of things many don't have.

First it takes patience. Patience for the all the honest fudds that don't know any better, then patience not to hammer the ones that do know better, but are just having a bad day.

Second, it takes empathy and maturity. And no, not the touchy, feely, in contact with your feminine side type of empathy. More like, just being able to quickly and easily switch perspectives. And the maturity to understand people's perspectives (even if they're wrong). You also have to have the maturity (much like) of a parent;knowing when to let things play out, and when to step in before things get out of hand.

Third, it takes being a team player and communicator. You represent the owner's house, so you need to change how you normally react, to what will fit into the owner's mindset of how things should be run. You also need to be able to convey that, whether it be in a reprimand, or an endorsement of a charity gathering/movement (GGWG's for example). You have to be succinct, and understand that some will attempt to use your own words against you. Half literate, mis-spelled, grammatically poor messages will not aid you in being a good moderator.

Fourth, it takes a thick skin. People are going to bitch. People are going to suck up. People are going to look/ask for favors. It's a slippery slope, and requires a person to take nothing personally (good or bad).

Finally, fifth, it takes passion. Passion for what the forum is about, and putting personal shit aside for it, and never being really thanked for it.

At least that has been my experience. And many who want to be moderators, really aren't equipped to be one because of a deficiency in one or more of the above points. It's a tough job being one, and it's a tough job finding one who a.) has the skill set, and b.) desires to have the job.

Kudos to those that do, with much thanks and admiration.

Probably not possible, but ideally it would seem helpful to all concerned if there were a mod or two assigned to each sub-forum, or if one mod was assigned to cover only two or three. Spread the work around. No idea how one would actually go about moderating the Bear Pit. The PX seems to be a special case too...but the more mods the better, I would think, to save SuperMod's and Admin's sanity (what is left of it).

I've seen this done on other non-firearm forums and it works pretty well, actually.

Mods can access anything they are not limited

I can limit to where they moderate, but I am not managing 30 different people

We don't have that big an issue, nobody needs to go Hunting for an issue,

Members can report posts if something comes up and everyone can access it

Don't start playing armchair quarterback with me, I know how I want it run

There is no reason to scan the site looking for issue, cause people will find them
