Just another case of those with power keeping their glass house from cracking.

It will be interesting once people start taking matters into their own hands when it comes to criminal cases...

The mechanism behind law, society, and government is a basic level of trust. Trust in that when matters reach certain people or departments, it is taken care of with a professional and unbiased procedure. Take that basic level of trust from people. Make them develop the idea that the government cannot and will not do anything to resolve their issues. What is the only course of action left for good folks who just want stability and closure in their lives?

We are already at that point. Plenty of time to fleece the tax payer (ie speed traps) no time to investigate crimes. Fucking road pirates

A lot of cold case murder and kidnapping files also exist out there. And usually when they DO get solved, it is the work of private investigators, suspects being captured for other crimes, spooking out and confessing, or like the case that OP posted: lower level crime lab techs or legal personnel. When they do happen, suddenly the officials are all jumping up and down trying to get their faces in the camera and yelling "WE did it WE solved it!".

People are not stupid. And these are not isolated incidents either.
