Just had an earthquake

Re: Just had an earthquake

I liked this last one, very slow rolling and lasted about 20 seconds. At first I thought I was transported back into my drunken state from last night.

Re: Just had an earthquake

Hope everyone is alright!!

One day Cali will be a damn island!!

Re: Just had an earthquake

I was sitting on the floor in my apt sorting through shit and thought maybe my blood pressure was rapidly dropping for some reason because suddenly everything was moving and the lights looked like they were dimming. It was when I actually realized that I was not passing out that I grabbed the gf and went out to the street to wait it out. Wasn't that big here in Newport Beach but it was my first quake ever. Was sorta cool. Glad it wasn't felt much here. She thought she was just getting dizzy as well as she was cleaning the bathroom.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

Re: Just had an earthquake

Just got up graded o a 7.4. Wasn't too bad just felt like it was rolling. I just started wearing reading glasses and the Dr. said you may feel dizzy if you look up too fast. That's what I though it was.

It rolled pretty good here. Had to grab a couple of plants to keep them from falling. Supposed to have a few broken water pipes in the county.

Re: Just had an earthquake

I actually thought someone was trying to get in my sliding glass door the first 30 seconds. As I walked out to check I noticed the pictures shaking and felt like a dummy standing there with a pistol in my hand.

It was a mover, for sure.

Re: Just had an earthquake

Any idea what the actual felt level was here in So Cal?

I didn't have anything falling over. I realize the epicenter was 7.2 or whatever but is there a diminishing scale based on radius?

Dunno if this ShakeMap helps at all:

http://www.cisn.org/shakemap/sc/shake/14607652/intensity.html

It's fairly localized

Re: Just had an earthquake

Very nice approx 30 sec rolling motion here in HB. The further away you are the more rolling. The closer you are the more shaking you get.

Re: Just had an earthquake

My upstairs neighbor has heavy feet and our apartment can shake a bit when he comes down the stairs from his apartment.

I was in the shower and felt the shaking and jokingly yelled out to my wife asking if it was an earthquake as I thought it was him and she yelled back.... "Um... YES... IT IS... get out here!!"

I will tell you what, I will take earthquakes over hurricanes and tornado's any day.

I had a colorful debate with an irate California transplant just after Andrew hit So. Florida in 92. She was pretty old and her children were parasites eager to get at her assets and absurdly large, new house, so perhaps her bitterness toward her new home surroundings weren't entirely born of terror!

Old Mrs. Goodwin could not reconcile herself to the utility of the several day's warning in advance of huuricanes. Even Tornados tend to come up in particularly bad thunder storms; usually with some warning, though not nearly as early as with hurricanes.

The sudden jarring terror of the earth moving, with no warning and no idea how long or severe the quake will be, as well as the regular occurrence of equally random after shocks is, in my opinion, not the more desirable disaster!

The duration and intensity of a really bad storm is nothing to wish for but at least the busy work of preparation in advance gives some comfort. I've never felt the earth move and can't help dreading a sense of paralysis regarding the "what will I do?" factor given the lack of this experience.

Glad you folks are okay.

Re: Just had an earthquake

Earthquakes can be unnerving. One night I rode out a decent sized one in a Central Asian country: almost an 8 on the scale. I was on a balcony and the building was swaying from side to side. You sure feel the power!

Re: Just had an earthquake

I experienced my first earthquake here in L.A. about half a month ago, small one, 4.4 at 4am, with the epicenter about 10 miles south of me. It just barely woke me up, I realized what it was just as it ended, figured since nothing had fallen over everything was fine and went back to bed lol.

Re: Just had an earthquake

I was in Mexico in the 80's for the Baja 500 and we were in a hotel all looking out the window when a small earthquake hit. I think it was a 5 to 5.5 We were on the 10th floor and that was a little unnerving. Felt like we were moving 10 or 15 feet as the hotel swayed back and forth. We got out of the hotel and went out for the rest of the night and morning and only went back to get our stuff.

Re: Just had an earthquake

It is a mixed bag there when you talk about building codes. A lot of the building do have rebar, most of the resorts will have it too. On the flip side some of the poorer areas have adobe and brick that will just fall right over. You also have a little more protection if you are in a wood house as it will shift and sway taking much more shaking and still stand.

I have lived in earthquake country.

I'll take the hurricanes. You know they are coming, and you can leave.

Earthquakes don't come with warnings.

But... How many damage-causing hurricanes do you see in a season?

Having lived in California 26 years (all my life), I can only think of one quake that caused any measurable property damage to anyone I know.

I'll take the quakes over hurricanes and tornados. FTS!

Re: Just had an earthquake

This place I live has been evacuated twice in the last 15 years.

In neither case did the evacuation turn out to be necessary.

The odds of a given coastal location suffering from hurricane damage in a given season are low. And we live in an RV - when we evacuate, home goes with us.

And nothing could convince me to live in California.

Well hell. I would have thought that Hurricanes were worse than that. Learn something new every day.

Maybe it's just preferring the evil you know - I've never been in a hurricane or tornado - but I think I'd still rather deal with earthquakes.

Re: Just had an earthquake

Hurricanes just suck. I lived in Florida for 19 years in Zellwood (of the Sweet Corn Festival Fame
wink.gif
) and it mainly just meant being stuck inside for a day or two and then outside in the muggy heat to clean up the trees and branches. The coastal areas get it bad sometimes. Hurricane Andrew was a freak storm. Most don't result in that sort of damage. The shitty thing for my parents and who knows how many other people is that State Farm is pulling all their home insurance coverage because they just lose too much money every year.

I can see where an earthquake would be bad if it was a strong one but Hurricanes definitely cause more property damage per year than earthquakes here in CONUS.

Re: Just had an earthquake

The damn thing made me sea sick, I felt like I was on a boat. Went on for a good 7 seconds too. But Im in LA so I didnt feel it like the guys in San Diego.

Totally... In a perfect world we would import Arizona's laws into California and then there'd be no where else in the world I'd rather live. As it stands, I know TONS of people who will leave or have left because of California laws and politics.

I liked San Diego when I went through MCRD. California is a beautiful state. It's unfortunate that the people elect politicians who keep propagating such dysfunctional policies.

Re: Just had an earthquake

Having grown up in southern California I have felt my share of shakers including being less than 2 miles from the epicenter of the Whittier quake in '87 and the Loma Prieta earthquake in '89. However even with their lack of warning, the widespread damage from an earthquake is usually less than that of a good hurricane.

Down here where I live-and I am like Lindy, extremely close to the water but in a house-I have seen the devastation of two recent nasty hurricanes; Ivan in '04 and Katrina. Obviously thought the hurricanes give you ample warning (DO YOU HEAR THAT NEW ORLEANS?) but the damage and the devastation is no comparison.

Re: Just had an earthquake

I think the real scare out here are the fires. Most could be prevented but there is a real weird struggle between the fire marshals that say clear brush and debris "X" amount of distance from your home and the enviro wacko's that have the state stopping any and all of the brush clearing because of the habitat removal.
There have been two really bad fires in my area that devastated hundreds of homes. That to me more scary than earthquakes.
here is a couple of pics

Re: Just had an earthquake

Having been born, raised and spending most of my life in So Cal, earthquakes causing severe damage were a once in a blue moon occasion and I never understood why people I met who had come from places that flood, blow away or get sucked up in a funnel on a yearly basis were so frightened of them. Most just rocked me back to sleep.

The real fear of a heavy enough earthquake in Cali is the catastrophic damage to the ageing aqueducts that the state relies on (as well as many others in the form of produce).

Agreed, the fires in many areas were more of a threat than earthquakes, then by the mudslides that often followed. However I think you can move the brush back even farther than "X" from your property and that isn't going to stop. Santa Ana's kick in and all bets are off. IMHO, building homes in places like the hills in So Cal that relay on that vegetation to keep the erosion and mudslides to a minimum and then wondering why it naturally (and historically) burns from time to time is like building next to an airport and then complaining about the noise that inevitably was going to be there. It's just going to happen and you need to be prepared.

Got to agree with you Mechanic, San Diego is a beautiful place. Eliminate the politics and half the population and it's ideal. BTW, did you race Baja? Use to race SCORE, La Rana and HYDRA. Never ran Baja but pitted for the 1000. IMHO, desert racing is tops.

Started out building stock cars for 2 local tracks but when Speedway 117 closed down I decided to go to off road racing. Never was really into it but having the welding, fab, and modified experience it was an easy move.

Started working for Nissan's factory team by taking a cup truck and throwing an extra 20 or so grand into it. At the time Nissan was starting the hardbody series and Chuck Norris was doing some advertising so we built the truck for him. Great guy, lots of cool stories.

Only drove one leg of a race and co-drove a couple but it is really a rich mans tax deduction so you gotta let them do the driving because they are paying for it. The fun I had showing someone that to get the truck and yourself from getting beat up you needed to go FASTER and when you are coming to a jump you need to step on the gas not the brake and seeing the look in their face like "what do you want me to do?"

I didn't make shit for money but it was the best time of my life going to Mexico and Las Vegas all the time. It was like you were a movie star or something.

Got married and had to run a business with the "Ex" wife so the fun was all over for me. I could not go back to it or do anything like it because the fun would suck me back in....

Re: Just had an earthquake

Absolutely a rich mans write off. I remember having to let the owners family members run a lap despite how bad of drivers they were. But that was the game to play for a little of the thrill.

Yep, the gas pedal is your friend. I always liked when the sun went down because my adrenaline climbed at night seeing the erratic lights cutting through the dust, coming and going into the distance.

Use to do fabrication and worked at a VW shop, so we built alot of the VW based vehicles. Did some truck stuff as well but never got to drive in one. Those things were bad ass. I think I got checked by Ivan and Walker plenty of times
smile.gif
.

First race I actually built, paid for, and drove in was in a class 11 (only thing I could afford) . Slower than shit, and my kidneys hurt for weeks. I think we took second in class because everyone else broke. But regardless, fun as hell and I always felt the lowely class 11 guys got a certain respect for being able to take the punishment.

Tried to talk the guy I work for now to get into it but he's stuck with rock crawling. After going fast (except when in the 11's), I just can't get into wasting all that money driving over rocks I can walk over faster.

This is me doing some testing on our class 8 down in Plaster City
Doing about 120 hitting the end of a whoop with old technology.
