Well the timing sucks, I put the car in the body shop a few weeks ago for paint and minor body work where a kid on a bicycle slammed into me at 20mph...
But it is paid for,....and the car gets 50mpg and I've had it for 17 years so it is well deserved..

She's not quite done, SOME trim will go back on, and they have a bit of buffing to do still...

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

No it has a Jetta 1.8 with the close ratio 5 speed, Eiboch suspension with 15" Toyo Proxy 4's on it.
Tektonic tuning exhaust from top to bottom.

Reliable.
Yes it has AC
Yes it has tunes, same exact tunes my truck has plus some...

It has paid for itself time and time over.

Next week she goes into the upholstery shop, I'll get the new carpet in while that is happening.

Then just a few minor things...

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

Never mess with success. Nice ride.

I had my '68 Volvo 142S for 14 years and well over 200k miles. It owed me nothing and because it didn't, I did a complete overhaul on it. By then we had another car for Celia, a '79 Charger RT/SE with a 440 Magnum, a cam, and a Holley 3310. Would do an honest 145MPH. The inside of the trunk lid was wallpapered with first place stickers from Englishtown.

When I sold it in '82 to buy an IROC, it had American Mag 14" wheels, H70R14 tires, 7/8" diameter front and rear sway bars, dual functional Corvette sidepipes (sounded fabulous when the resonance kicked in at 85MPH) with no crossover, an overdrive tranny with the top gear electric lockout disabled and routed through a gearshift knob with a Linelock electric switch installed (8 forward, 2 reverse speeds), GM Firebird metallic olive paint and a very radical white striping job. The engine had a pair of very small (reduced turbine lag to dang near nuthin') Garret turbos, two Weber DCOE50 carbs, and a spacer under the head to drop the compression ratio from 11:1 to 8:1. Estimated HP was around 250. At the time the Volvo B18B engine was the only one in the world with a forged block. Would take any corner at twice the speed the yeellow warning signs recommended. Only had one bad habit. Under hard cornering, the rear sway bar would occasionally lift the inside rear wheel of the ground. That was fixed by remounting the bar to reduce its mechanical advantage.

Very little under the car was original.

Used to give Corvettes (Hell, damn near everything) some mighty big surprises. My cars were serious machines back then.

If I had to sell this car 3.6k would make a down payment.

I would not let this car go under $8000

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

figured as much. I am looking hard at a new Fiesta Sport, and a have a certain company in Scottsdale AZ looking for either a vintage drivable, non project car, Cortina, Mini, Morris Minor, Osca, or other solid vintage car with race upgrade potential. BAsicall Panty 6 wants the Fiesta, and I want an old vintage racer 4 banger that I can do the work on myself if it needs fixed.

If money no object I would be rolling sick in a dropped and channeled big block powered Lincoln.
If my Pop gets the stuff together to swap out the motor in my Stang he is sending it out,but I don't see it happening soon since he will have to send it out to the shop. I can't see a 65 y/o guy doing an engine swap solo like I used to do with our vehicles. Tranny/motor out in 30 mikes and on the stands ready for tear down or rebuild. I think that process would take me about three hours these days...

Guessing the 1.8 will not be in stock form, no K03 for you. A good friend has a very similar setup with the stage whatever that makes somewhere around 350hp. It really is a stupid car to drive and makes complete asses out off all the Porsche drivers in West Palm Beach.

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

ArcticLight, That's a good looking Scirocco. Make sure you keep us posted on the progress.

I wish I could have kept mine... Needed a truck for work and there was no way to load plywood into the GTI

'95 GTI VR6, intake and exhaust work, adj. Koni's and more stereo stuff than needed (I was a lot younger). It wasn't a R32 but was an absolute blast to drive and ate up the twisties.

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

I have 207k trouble free miles on my 2003 Jetta TDI, I change the oil and the rest of the filters every 20k, oil samples say the oil is still GTG but every 20 is simple and easy to remember, I only buy Michlens and pump them up to 40psi, my first lasted 80k, I put a set of BFGs on and 20k later they were bald, second set of Michlens lasted 85K, now I'm on the third set, I changed the fifth gear cluster in my drive way in 1hr15, and my Diesel stops are every 800 miles, I will probably drive this car another 10 years, by then it should have almost 600k.

Oh and it's paid for of course

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

Looking good ArcticLight, sounds like it's basically going to be a new car when your finished. Money well spent. I had one of those at one time.

It kills me, 50 mpg cars have been around for a long time, and best of all they didn't need a trunk full of batteries!

What engine RPM and MPH are you getting with the fifth gear conversion?

I didn't know there were other Dubbers on here

That's actually where my username came from. It's short for WustenHaschen, or 'Desert Rabbit.' My car is a Rabbit from it's roots, and I'm from Az, so Desert Rabbit she is. Shortened to 'WusteHase' to fit on my Europlate.

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

I was considering getting a VW CC VR6 in the spring, but now I'm leaning towards a Harley. Not quite sure which way to go just yet...

When it rains you'll wish you had the VW..

Re: JW3 and other VW enthusiasts!!!

Well guys the majority of work is FINALLY complete - picked up the seats tonight - that was not fun getting them back in the vehicle with new carpet.

Lot of little things left to do - including troubleshooting electrical, new starter, etc..

But damn good job he did on the seats.

This car used to have a red interior - I'm only leaving the door panels red - everything else going black.

That concludes the spending on this for a while too, Kerching...
