Kifaru Woobie

Re: Kifaru Woobie

<- Doobie

Damp, low 40's - in the back of a PU.

I had on a hat a lite fleece top, sweats, wool socks.

I did not wrap up in it.

Did two nights like that this past fall. Worked out great.

Good luck

Re: Kifaru Woobie

It is one of those things that you hate to buy because of the price, but once you have it you think "How in the hell did I ever get along without this thing?" I love mine & use it all the time.

Re: Kifaru Woobie

I've been using mine (the first generation) in Afghanistan for about 4 years. It is a great piece of kit...packs smalls, lofts well, and insulates quickly. If you use it as a blanket while sleeping on something like a cot, it tends to slip off...the material is pretty slick, but that is a minor quibble.

It is larger than a poncho liner, yet can pack smaller. It has it's own storage pouch sewn to itself. It definitely blows a regular poncho liner away.

Re: Kifaru Woobie

We got our team to issue us them as part of our cold weather gear package. For that, they drape over armor better than anything to keep you warm (NFL side-line style great coats were WAY more expensive, too).

The "man blanket" has many uses and is probably one of the best pieces of kit we have. We used them in a recent, week long, cold weather training event and they were coveted by those without them.

Re: Kifaru Woobie

Thought I would add this to the thread. I have a Woobie on my list of new gear to buy for this year's summer camping.

To: Kifaru.

Hello,

I am interested in the Woobie and Doobie. I have read a bit about them , but have not found any specific temperature rating guides. I understand they are quilts/liners, and as such do not provide as controlled insulation as a sleeping bag. However, a
rough guideline concerning their limitations temperature wise would be great.

Is it fair to say the Woobi is comparable to 45F bag?
The Doobie to a 20F bag?

Or am I completely off?

Thanks,

xxx.

xxx, you are right in the ballpark on those figures. I have personally tested the Woobie down to 40 degrees wearing only polypro tops and bottoms and a beanie. I have not tested the Doobie, but close to 20 degrees would be about right. I would guess high 20's. Hope this helps.

Re: Kifaru Woobie

Kifaru makes good stuff, but the price it about twice what it should be IMHO. I've owned plenty of Kifaru stuff, but as I get wiser I realize you can get 99% of what they offer for 40% the price.

The price you are paying is for labor in the US. So it just comes down to if you care about paying for US labor or labor in another country.

negative ghost rider. It's a fancy blanket, end of story. If you owned one then you can see there isn't a whole lot of "labor" involved. At least in the woobie. As for their packs, different story.

I've had one for a couple years. Way too much money for what you get.

Is it nice, sure is. But I don't think it's 6 times nicer than a usgi

Re: Kifaru Woobie

I looked online and did not see the usual suspects making it anymore, Brigade Quartermasters, Ranger joes, US cav etc. Not sure where to tell you to look for one, we used to carry a waterproof bivy sack and a poncho liner, the thinsulate ones packed down smaller, but the originals still work well. I have two original ones because someone swiped my thinsulate one out of the barracks Now I have the snugpak SF system and just carry a light bag and bivy

I don’t know if I would go that far. Yes, the Woobie is expensive, but that’s also a bit subjective.

As for six times better than the USGI liner? I definitely think it is.

The materials are of significant higher quality.

It’s bigger but compresses as small, if not smaller that the USGI. The Woobie is also lighter than the USGI. It is a lot warmer and has loft. The USGI’s have no loft to speak of. As a hiker these qualities alone make it worth the price over the USGI.

I prefer the loops of the Woobie to the strings on the USGI. I also like the integral stuff sack.

US Cav used to sell them back in the day, but they don't seem to anymore.

I was going to try and roll my own with come black C100 Thinsulate I picked up off ebay for $7/yd. Basically it is black quilted fabric on one side attached to the Thinsulate. I just needed to pick up some 1.1 ripstop for the other side.

Got lazy and ended up picking up a 782gear Smoke Kloke (2oz Climashield as well) for $104 from US Cav (20% coupon) on the 9th, got it today. Slightly smaller at 60x80 vs 64x93 for the Woobie.

Re: Kifaru Woobie

I have a couple of the Wiggy's versions. They use an insulation called "lamilite". They are substantially warmer and thicker than standard poncho liners.

In fact, I sleep hot and when using one indoors for on my rack in my hooch (CHU), it was a bit much. They are very slippery too.

BTW, Wiggys will ship to APOs, and offer a substantial discount. The quality is top notch.

Re: Kifaru Woobie

Climashield is the insulation used in the Kifaru Woobie and sleeping bags and it is one of the best synthetics on the market right now. Some people buy the raw materials and make blankets for a fraction of the retail woobie cost. With sleeping bags, their are a number of top-rated bags that use climashield: North Face Tundra, Snowshoe & Cat's Meow being very popular .... for about 1/3 of Kifaru.
