I had previously seen stickers that were available with the dope for a 175gr SMK that had been placed on the inside of the flipup of the Butler caps as opposed to putting it on the side of the rifle. Also, the Mildot Master book says the Drop Decal from EXD engineering is available to put on the mildot master, but I have googled and have not found the Drop Decal or EXD Engineering selling it. Any other retailers for these items?

I just hand print in small characters on an Avery mailing label of sufficient width to match the diameter of my rear scope cap.

Having pretty labels is much less important than hitting the target. That's my opinion, anyway.

Are you testing your rounds, or using predetermined data based on the round? If so what table/data are you using?

How can you say that and expect to be taken seriously? Having pretty labels is MUCH MORE important than hitting the target. One gets no respect at the local 100-yard range for target work, it's all about looking tacticool while shooting.

Damn, some people miss the point intentionally, it seems.

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

I have several ballistics programs. JBM Ballistics is fine. I have confirmed the predicitions of JBM prior to making the stickers, as one should do with any programs.

Here's an excerpt of another post where I described the process of refining ballistic program data:

The primary purpose of a ballistic program is to get you close on the first round in an environment that is different from that in which you normally shoot.

At ranges of 500 yards or less, your dope will not vary much irrespective of the atmospheric conditions - except for extreme temperature variations with some ammunition, which can affect muzzle velocity.

What I do is to shoot at the longest possible range at which the bullet will reliably stay supersonic. I shoot enough rounds to have a good idea of the average elevation required to hit that target, while carefully recording the temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure.

Then I adjust the BC or muzzle velocity in the ballistic program until the elevation calculation for those conditions matches my shooting results.

If I'm using one of Bryan Litz's tested BCs, I adjust the muzzle velocity, because his are usually more reliable than the manufacturer's.

You could read the post to which you responded again, and think about it. Here's the executive summary.

Shoot your load to long distance, recording the barometric pressure, humidity, and temperature, as well as the dope required to hit the target.

Put the conditions in the ballistic program. Change the muzzle velocity or BC until the program output matches your data. If you trust your chronograph, change the B.C. If you trust the B.C., which I do if I use Bryan's, change the muzzle velocity.

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

There is a program out there called FinePrint. Works great but it cost $50. I used to have the program years ago and it allows VERY small printing. I have yet to find a freeware that can compare.

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

Great timing on your post Lindy. I was yanking my remaining hair out trying to figure out why 3 different ballistic calculators disagreed with my range results from yesterday with what I thought was a chronographed load. Your article showed me several places for error right off the bat. It looks like it is back to the books, or should I say range, LOL. As always, thanks for the input.

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

My pleasure. In a variation on an old saw, a man with one ballistics program knows what his dope is. A man with two or more is never quite sure...

right on right on.

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

Though I use a ballistic program - and am looking for another (X-Bal) and a new PDA - I think it is always good to have a dope sheet and so besides it being in my book, I use the Avery method as well - BUT I place it on a small piece of card board which fits tightly into the cap.

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

M.45 here on the 'hide was making nice ones that snap-fit into your BC Flipups.

I also prefer a data card hanging off my rifle. Then there's my Palm with a ballistics program massaged to match my field data on all my loads/rifles...

Oh yeah, I also have a data book.

Bear in mind that some generic dope off the internet or where ever for some random bullet isn't going to match up to your rifle so that dope isn't going to be a good dope....

Re: Lens Cap Dope Stickers And Mildot Stickers

Hey Guys-

I was making Cap Cards for a while but my real work has been so busy that I've had to cease the production. They were made by hand and took me about an hour and a half to retype, print and cut for size. I had so many orders I couldn't get my regular work done.

Thanks for your interest!
