Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

with 750 amax i would never , never exceed 215grs using h50bmg, i'd start at 190gr , and not exceed 210, Its hard to read pressure signs from 50 cals. I might just keep it around 205 , 200 myself. (AND KEEP AN EYE ON AMMO TEMP)

ya , dont flirt with the max loads , if you kaboom yourself you will need to go to the hospital .... or the morgue

this is what hodgdon's website says , but this is probably for a Ma duece and not a rifle ( im assuming you want rifle loads)

if your doing an M2 , i cant help you out.

Bullet Weight (Gr.) Manufacturer Powder Bullet Diam. C.O.L. Grs. Vel. (ft/s)
650 GR. M-33 Hodgdon US 869 .510" 5.425" 265.0 3155
655 GR. ADI FMJ Hodgdon H50BMG .510" 5.450" 248.0 3029
750 GR. HDY A-MAX Hodgdon US 869 .510" 5.450" 250.0 2944
750 GR. HDY A-MAX Hodgdon H50BMG .510" 5.450" 233.0 2800
800 GR. BAR SOLID Hodgdon US 869 .510" 5.630" 250.0 2895
800 GR. BAR SOLID Hodgdon H50BMG .510" 5.630" 225.0 2725

I might use US896 , i never tried it , i used wc860 at around 220 grains with API , it worked out well.

good luck friend

Yes I should clarify I am looking for rifle loads and looking for personal favorite loads using these combos in a rifle. Thanks

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

Here are pics of my new rig made by Prairie Gun Works the chassis and stock are by CADEX Defense PGW sells it as a complete unit. The bolt in the pics is not fluted but comes fluted on production models. The barrel is fluted but hidden by the CADEX chassis. This is why I am looking for some load info.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

omg that is awesome , you should probably buy the RSI pressure trace system , and get in contact with the your rifle company, ask them what is safe and what you should expect. Its cheap compared to what your doing. You should be good then , i hear some guys really overcharge their 50s , so my load recommendations might be conservative.

Thanks! One day I would like to purchase this system not in the books right now though. I did find some good info that 214 grains of H-50 as well as 218 grains of H-50 work very well with the Amax's so thats what I am going to try.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

I use 225 grns of H50 in my AR50 and 222 in my Tac50 behind Amax's.221 grns in my friends 96 Windrunner.Your best bet is to start low and work up.214 and 218 grain charges are good for plinking, but your going to have to load'em hotter for long range shooting.Hodgedon's starting load is 235 grains, but I wouldn't reccommend useing that charge weight.Nice rifle by the way and good luck with it too.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

Thanks for the info will definitely try some hotter loads at distance I will be shooting from 640 yrds all the way to 2400 yrds. Thanks again for the help!

I also use around 220 with AMax in my Windrunner. There is no need to get the pressure trace unless you are doing testing for the builder or manufacturer of the rifle. At most use QL it works very well as long as you have your water weight correct.

Just play around with it. Start out around 219 with some 3 shot groups and run no higher than 225. look for loose primers pockets when you deprime and of course sticky bolt lift. try for the longest range you can get 300 yard min. until your vertical stringing is at its lowest.

Go back home and start loading the fireformed cases. Then you can start a couple grains high and low of that with 5 shot groups at .5 grain spread until you find the real sweet spot. than "F" around with your seating depth.

Oh most important thing is to check for length of your bore for proper case trim and OAL to the lands. These two items will be the things that will get you hurt if you don't have some clearance.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

NICE rifle...good luck with it and be careful. You'll need to find out what kind of chamber you have in that...a "match" chamber ( tight) or a "machine gun" chamber ( loose, shoots anything)or maybe a hybrid. That will determine what's a starting load.In my first .50, a State Arms with a machine gun chamber I was loading H50bmg 235 grns with the 750 Amax NO problems. My new .50 a Windrunner with a match chamber anything over 225 grns is a sticky bolt lift and sweet spot is 220 grns.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

Don't waste time,primers/projectiles loading Hodgdon powders.

Load VihtaVuori 20N29 for 700-800gr & VihtaVuori 24N41 for 600-700gr projos.

Keep the A-Max's under 2800fps at temps of 60 degF w/a 1:15 twist or faster.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

224gr of H50 under 750 AMAX loaded to .015 off the lands in a Barrett 99 with LC brass gives me about 2750fps.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

250gr of US869 with 808gr Lehighs seated to 6.090 in my LAR

1) 2788
2) 2740
3) 2735
4) 2765
5) 2786

High: 2788
Low: 2735
E.S.: 53
Ave.: 2762.8
S.D.: 24.9

I haven't worked with this powder much, but from what I have seen, it's not the best for accuracy.

Re: Load data for .50BMG using H50 or US869 and AMAX

I use 222 grains of WC872 (similar to 869) with 750 grain amax out of a M2HB. The chrony reads consistantly around 2700 fps. I also use 230 grain with 645 lehighs which are at 3000 fps.

WC872 is $49.00 for 8# at wideners...can't beat that price.
