So in 1991 I was sworn in as a Reserve officer, beginning my LE career.

The night I was sworn in I got a call that a vehicle had crashed the gates and someone fell out of their car.

It was the very mayor that swore me in. WTF Do you do? LOL

We got him a ride hom.

POULSBO — Former Poulsbo Mayor Richard “Mitch” Mitchusson died Friday night after losing his battle with cancer. He was 71.

Mitchusson was Poulsbo’s longest serving mayor, holding the position from 1985 to 1999. He stepped down a year after being re-elected.

Before becoming mayor, Mitchusson served for eight years as Poulsbo’s public works director. He worked at the city of Poulsbo for a total of 23 years, according to Kitsap Sun archives.

Mitchusson served in the U.S. Navy as a boatswain’s mate, which is how the Oklahoma native landed in Kitsap, according to Poulsbo Councilman Dale Rudolph.

Mitchusson joined the council after the city and its leadership underwent a significant shake-up. The majority of the city’s department heads resigned, and the sitting mayor at the time and a number of council members were also asked to leave after a vote of no-confidence.

Rudolph’s father served as interim mayor for six months before Mitchusson was elected. Mitchusson’s first task was to rebuild the city’s staff, Rudolph said.

“He took over the city at such a dire time and brought it back,” Rudolph said. “One of the things he was really renowned for was his access. Everybody knows Mitch. He was perfect as a small-town mayor.”

Rudolph credits Mitchusson for driving much of Poulsbo’s growth, including the development of the Olhava/College MarketPlace area, the widening of Highway 305 and bringing to town Boxlight, a computer-projection systems seller, and a branch campus of Olympic College.

Most recently, Mitchusson was facing charges of felony indecent liberties after he was accused of fondling and engaging other inappropriate conduct with several Poulsbo women. He was released from detention, on house arrest, in June 2009 because of his health issues.

Attorney Matthew Clucas requested the release, saying that Mitchusson suffered from Pick’s disease, a degenerative neurological disorder similar to dementia. Loss of inhibitions is one of the symptoms of Pick’s disease.

The Kitsap Sun is continuing to report this story. Check back later for more comments from Poulsbo leaders.
