Soliciting advice for a build, dangerous, yes...

Requirements:
- Long action (because I have a spare)
- Uses large rifle, or LRM primers
- Short(er) barrel - 20-22” would be great as it will have an Ultra 7 or Dominus hanging off
- .30 or smaller (edit - added)

Goal:
- Lighter weight hunting rifle
- Elk, mule deer hiking in

Not counting ounces - this will have an adjustable cheek piece and DBM, and I tell my wife that I‘m still in shape so I can carry a bit more than a 2lb 7oz rifle with a pixie stick for a barrel. Love the thought of a 280AI for no particular reason, 300wsm sounds cool, and someone whispered “Sherman” in my ear once.

Is there any long action cartridge worth running through a tube less than 24”? Dumb question? Asking for a friend.

I've always liked the idea of a short barreled 300wsm for hunting suppressed. Usually, this is done in a short action, but couldn't you do it in a long action and have plenty of room for seating bullets long?

The below cartridges would also work well for you...

280
280ai
3006
6.5-06
6.5x55
6.5x55ai
6.5-284 Norma
284 Win

Heck, why does it matter what cartridge works best in a shorter barrel? I've seen a 16" PRC and it looked awesome haha. Just run what you want.

Sherman 300 Max would be my vote for the short barrel.
