I have been looking for a scope that will hold up to a .308s recoil.
This is what I am thinking of...
Target knobs
Variable power 3or4x-16x X 50mm
Illuminated reticle
Side focus
$300-$800

Will be used primarily for hunting 100-400 yards, but will also be used for target shooting paper and so forth to 675 yards.

So far its a todd up between the Millet and the Vortex. I have no hands on experience with either of these. So far, my only dealing have been with high end glass like Leupold and NF. So something of glass quality and has no issues with tracking would be nice. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

Tangodown,

You price point is too low, or your features list is too expansive. Go on up to $800. or so and you have some choices: i.e the Vortex PST's and Bushnell 4200 3-12x44mm FFP Illuminated, just to name a few.

There is nothing with good glass, target knobs, w/trouble free tracking and illumination, in the under $600. price range. Hell, your pickings are slim with those features under $1.3k

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

Good point guys...I think $800 is in the ballpark. I know quality glass costs money, but I dont want junk for my $$$. I'm just not looking to anything past $800, for this application. Preferably $3-600. I am looking at the Vortex, pretty heavily. How does the Falcon Menace rank amongst the Millet and Vortex?

BobinNC...I will have to check out the Bushnell 4200 3-12x44mm FFP Illuminated.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

Keep an eye on the optics for sale here. A 4.5-14 mk4 sold this weekend for $775. Had I seen it, I would have snagged it. Its pretty common to find the mk4's around your price range as long as you can do without the illuminated reticle.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

Don't skimp on your scope...you can't hit what you can't see. Not to mention durability, consistent clicks and adjustments, and holding zero once sighted.

Roger that. I would like to top it off with a 3-15x50 NXS but it's just not in the cards right now.

Tried 2 Falcons - both 5-25 - both were not consistent - adjustments dropped off after about 4 mils of elevation. For the $$$ the Falcons offer a lot of features but I would suggest spending your $$$ elsewhere.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

I used to have a Falcon 4.5-18x56. I never had any problems out of it on a 300 WSM. I have upgraded now to an IOR but it was a great scope for the money.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

If your going to drop money on anything, the scope is the place to do it. There is nothing like having poor quality glass that fogs up or anything like that to ruin your shot.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

It all depends on what you are looking for.
If it is a FFP scope you want, your choices in that price range are limited.
If a SFP scope will meet you needs, then your options are wide open.
As a baseline aroung 300 bucks, the millet TRS-1 is a good scope. Feature rich with decent glass and a good warranty.
If you move up to the Bushnell 4200 SFP scopes, the Nikon Monarch, Weaver Grand Slam series, Hawke tactical series you will get better glass. The better the glass, the less the need for an illuminated reticle.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

I use a Nikon Monarch 8-32 x 50 on my Savage 308 and shoot out to 1000yds VERY consitently for a 308. Never had any problems with it holding zero. If you can do without Illuminated Reticle, I would put a Monarch in your choices for sure

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

- Burris SixX 2-12x40 E1 Ballistic Plex, Illuminated reticle, no side focus, $750, excellent glass, good mechanicals
- Burris Tac-30 3.5-10x50, Ballistic Plex, no Adj Obj, Illum. reticle, $550, very good glass, OK mechanicals
- Vortex 6-24x50 Adj Obj with Illuminated reticle, $250, OK Glass, decent mechanicals

Right now you can get the Kahles 3-9x36 Adj Obj. from CDNN for $600. It is true alpha glass, an outstanding scope that would normally cost twice as much and that will last a life time. I'd get that instead.

Re: Looking for suggestions on a scope?

Gents,

Here is a brand scope thats only been around a few years, owned by ATK, a company that also owns Weaver scopes, Federal ammunition, Speer bullets, CCI and other gun related companies.

Brand is Nitrex, has one year over counter exchange program and life time warranty for buyer.

I bought a TR2 series Nitrex about a month ago...very very similiar to Weaver Super Slam scope. Same Japanese glass and internal mechanics.

Recently sat 2 benches at range from gent with a new rifle equipped with a Zeiss Conquest scope 4.5-15X44 with SF and target turret adjustments. Experienced hunter who'd bought a new rifle and Zeiss scope for elk hunting. My Nitrex is a 3-15X42 SF with pull up adjustment caps that functions like target turrets. Asked Zeiss guy to compare my Nitrex to his Zeiss. After viewing thru my scope and playing with its features, adjustments, focus and etc., Zeiss owner had nothing but positive things to say about Nitrex glass/optics and its features. Basically, guy said my Nitrex was comparable to his Zeiss. Except for one big difference.....His Zeiss cost him around $850, the Nitrex cost me $218. Should have seen the Zeiss guys face when I told him my final cost on the Nitrex.

Hard to believe isn't it. Well, my scope had a retail price of around $575....Weaver Super Slam version retails for $697. My particular scope is a discontinued model available only at Natchez Shooters Supply for price I paid. With Natchez discounted price and Nitrex $100 rebate on TR2 scopes, able to buy a heck of a scope for a heck of a price of $218.

Same kind of Nitrex TR2 scope, but 4-20X50 SF available at Natchez from $279 to about $300 final cost, depending on reticle ordered. Gent I shoot with has a rifle on order from Remington custom shop. He and 3 other scope savvy guys at our shooting club had critiqued my Nitrex a few weeks before. All thought the optics/glass were top notch, comparable to any of their Burris, Leopold, Sightron, Nikon scopes. Anyway, guy with rifle on order informed me he'd decided to buy a higher power Nitrex scope from Natchez for use on the 600 yard berm nearing completion at our shooting club.

Since the Zeiss guy and Remington custom shop guy, I've ordered one of the Nitrex TR2 4-20X50 SF scopes from Natchez. I don't have any pretentions of being a scope expert...just a retired guy on a limited income that enjoys shooting his scoped rifles and reloads at a private shooting club once a week with a diverse group of gents that are experienced hunters...custom rifle benchrest shooters...avid reloaders and etc. All I can say is my Nitrex impressed them, which was good enough for me to blow my gun/shooting budget for well into next year on a 2nd Nitrex.
