Looking into putting a scope on my Savage Model 24. It is an O/U, .223 top barrel and 20ga bottom barrel.
It is used mostly for small-game and predator hunting at relatively short ranges. It may get used with some 20ga slugs from time to time as well. It's a pretty versatile gun.
Something low profile and maybe a 1-4, 1-6, or 2-7 power. I have been leaning towards the Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 with the Accu-Range reticle. I think this reticle suits the rifle and shotgun pretty well.
Opinions?

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

One of my hunting rifles has a Redfield Revolution 3-9x40 with the standard duplex reticle and I would recommend them highly in their price range. Made in USA scope with a good warranty and good glass for under $200, what's not to love? New Redfield's are GTG.

I think you may be onto something with that reticle for a combo gun. I don't care for it for a straight up rifle, but if the shotgun barrel will pattern within that ring in the reticle that might be cool. Would make for a great turkey/varmint combo, you'd have a couple holdovers for the .223.

Seems like it probably wouldn't work to get the scope zero'd for the rifle AND have the shotgun pattern correctly to match, but I'd be interested to hear about it if it does. I've thought many times about a Savage 24F. What kind of accuracy do you get out of it and how heavy a bullet have you tried?

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

So far I have only shot 50gr V-max's out of it. I am getting 2-2.5" groups @ 100yds with the Iron sights. I figure I'll do some more experimenting after I choose and mount a scope.

Go as fast as you can to Cabelas.com and order a Bushnell 4200 elite 3-9x40 for $199 on clearance. They have a promo code right now where you get free shipping on all orders over $150.

I looked through a redfield at academy and it was pretty decent, but they had a bushnell 3200 elite at the time and the glass was clearer and sharper out of the 3200 - both were 3-9x40 IIRC. The redfield got kinda dark at the highest power where the bushnell did not.

The 4200 is supposed to be better than the 3200, and according to the 2009 Rifle Scope Ranking scale put out by opticstalk the 4200 is on the same level as a Zeis Conquest in glass.

I've never looked through both at the same time though.

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

Take a look at the Burris Fullfield II, it might be a little over $200 but the glass {light gathering} will easly compare to the big name brands that cost a lot more up to double and the internal parts are a lot higher quality then those big brand names too>

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

Check out the Bushnell Banner series of scopes. Inexpensive, accurate, and pretty dependable for the price. I think they make a 3-12 I think. Nice range of magnification for small game and predators.

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

Thanks for the input guys.
Couple of specs I think I should mention I'm looking for. Lowest power 1-2. Highest power 4-7. 1" tube cuz I already have rings. $200 MAX (I know there are decent scopes in the $200-$300 range, but thats not what I need for this gun)

Thanks for the link. It looks like it is basically the same as the Redfield that I linked to in my original post. I seem to like the reticle in the Redfield though, so I'm leaning that way.

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

I have the 4-12x40mm Redfield. It looked to be nice in theory, but in reality it isn't so. The problem I have is it has too much eye relief. I have no room to actually use it.

My rifle is a Remington Model 7. With Leupold bases and std rings my head couldn't even be on the stock to threw it. Then I want to dual extensions to move it forward. It wasn't enough yet. About the only mounting option I had then was to put a rail on it. I got it from EGW. The M7 does not share the availability as a M700 does. So I get that and can move it forward enough, but my scope sits too high to use it. Now I'm modifing the rail and looking for even lower rings. The scope is a real PITA to mount on this, or any of my rifles. It's about ready to be chucked in the scrap bin for something else.

Re: Low Power Scope for Hunting ($200 max)

Couple of scopes not mentioned yet, both 1":

Vortex Viper 2-7x32 at SWFA for $149.95

and there are a lot of people offering the pentax lightseeker 3-9x32 on ebay for less than $120 shipped. I have one and it is a great scope, especially for that price.

should keep some money in your pockets, and both are excellent scopes for the money.

I'm liking the Vortex, it has the same style reticle that I like on the redfield.
