M40 scope base project by LRI

I seen that over the weekend and put it on the watch list to see what happens. That guy had another one (had like green paint on it) on GB say about 6 months or so back. The reticle was broke and he had pictures posted to show the reticle was broke. He had it listed for $3995. Was for sale for like 3 months. He just kept relisting it and it did sell for the $3995 price tag. It was also a 50cal scope.

This was back around the same time I bought mine form Jrb572 here on the forums (which by the way the scope works very good with no issues).

Like I said... I was shocked that it sold for $4k with a broken reticle.
Glad to hear that Frank. Glad you like it.

Actually looks like the seller @Joemore has an account here. @Joemore what the hell is up with $20,000 for a scope?
Fixin to send him a message

I looked up that 50cal scope s/n 1292 that was linked in this thread for sale on GB for $5k.

It sold for $1152 back in Feb. 2022.

Yesterday I had a pit stop in Sioux Falls, SD, on my way home from Omaha, NE, to pick up more artifact pieces for this scope base project. A good hour-long meeting in my pickup at a truck stop reviewing parts once again humbled me greatly as the subtle details of how these parts evolved is cool to see. This stuff is getting its teeth in me, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to try and bring some of it back to life.

Ryan was gracious to entrust me with his XM3 rifle. Driving home with that thing caused me to change my habits a bit. Normally, my cruise is set to 90-93 across SD, and I don't think twice about it. Yesterday I drove at posted speeds the entire way. (SD freeways are 80mph when outside of city limits) Home safe n sound. I've got a ton of juicy stuff to molest. More base and ring sets, the rifle, and some Barrett junk as well.

Now that I have a legit XM3 scope base, I can start that dissection as well. I also have the correct recoil lug.

My P90 project is nearing fruition, so it puts some time back on the clock to work on this again.

Good times.

It was a long day yesterday, but totally worth it! Hopefully Chad will post some photos of the artifact horde that he's now entrusted with! I think we're about to enter a golden age of cloning and having insanely rare/unique stuff finally becoming available in replica form! Hope you guys are excited for things to come!

Going to be a time where I am suffering from which build do I devote resources to because I can't do them all!

Maybe these need added to the reproduction list. Even if no one has an original that that can be lent out that picture helps more than someones memory ever would.

I'm on it. If you guys have any archive photos showing that piece, post them up. I'm most curious to know if they have any engraving on them for adjustments.

Here are a few photos I got from the CMP auction site for an XM3 that was being auctioned.

Getting into this thread now... I have 3D design experience and if needed let me know... I also have a few parts..

The XM2010 Chassis is another version of the RACS chassis in extremely high demand. The buttstock design was better in my opinion than the later skeletonized design with the lock levers. Any RACS would be awesome though especially in both short and long action version. Sorry LRI, the can of worms has been opened...

Both stocks are useful, and each has its own benefits, but XM2010 is usually more stable than the Lightweight one... But the lightweight one can be made very stable too, just needs extra care.

Well shit Ryan, I thought I had got those pics from the CMP. My bad man. You and I have traded so many pics over the years I completely forgot I guess.

Yes everyone, these pics were from Ryan as he was helping me with my personal XM3 build.

Sorry about that

Yeah. Chad is a Horsepower whore. I’ve been in his Pontiac street machine. It’s crazy powerful!!! Like REALLY CRAZY!!!

Original Winchester 1895 Lee Navy sniper rifle (Winchester A5 scope isn't mounted in the photo), it's the only sniper version known
Awesome! Thanks. That makes the mount brackets make more sense. Just passed recurrent checkride and was having a few beers going “is that some sort of wwi armorer ross sniper special?”

A one of a kind sniper rifle. I want your job, lol. Two things, one are we gonna see something even more special happen? And two, when is the book coming out? I would like a signed copy.

Keep up the great work!

We know about his supercharger. Look up hoodrat 2.0. It goes on his Pontiac.

You had to bring it up....lol.

Whole new setup this year. (more like next year, as we prolly won't get to do much with it this summer since it's still at the machine shop being finished) I made a lot of parts for this thing, but I don't own a boring bar or a hone for the block work. I was able to bore out the lifter bores here, though. That was a cool/fun Sunday project.

427 LS based
Dart tall deck block
Callies billet crank
GRP alloy rods
Billet slugs
Wrist pins that look more like steel rods with a small hole through them. (ridiculous!)
CID LS7 heads, Ti/Inconel valves and over 430CFM at .800+lift. (absurd!)
Jesel stuff for valvetrain
.800+ lift on the cam (solid roller)
Billet dry sump oil pan
Big Whipple (8.3L) blower
All the methanol... Last year's engine consumed almost 3.5 gallons every pass. (burnout&pass)

Hunting for a little over 2K flywheel with this bugger and 4's in the 8th mile. Last year we made an estimated 1500-ish flywheel with a 6.0L block. -that survived 5 passes before splitting the #4 main web in half. -oopth

I didn't bring it up first. Besides we appreciate the nice work and the attention to detail. Hope you get it all worked out properly.

CMP I think has killed the USO scope market for the time being.

People have been getting returns at USO prices.

My understanding is current USO no longer has the institutional knowledge of the USO that built the MSTs. They could relearn it though.
The same person who of built most of MST 100s 15 years ago is the same person that is building scopes for USO today would say the institutional knowledge still exists . You are correct on the part about the CMP killing the market. Over the last several years they have released a ton of MSTs. Lack of Demand is the number one thing keeping us from doing another run of MST100s. If the demand ever returns it is something we would like to do.

I assume most saw that another Unertl 10x listed today on CMP’s auction page, jumped to $3k quick…..there is a market if USO decides to produce more MST-100s, especially with the quality mount in production now.
Yep, it’s 10 days out, already at 3K and even has a listed flaw, a bent zero screw.

I do think there is a market for the scopes. Granted it is a niche market.

@USO-Josh, instead of doing another run of MST-100's, how about making a limited edition batch of your USO M40A3MVP 360 Tactical rails that were used by MARSOC Marines used on some M40A3's back in the mid-2000's before the PGW EFR was adopted? A handful of collectors on here have asked me if I have any of those USO 360 rails available. I only have 1 extra rail, I bought it a long time ago. Since numerous people have asked me about it, it might just be fair to toss it up on Gunbroker. As of right now, that's the only loose USO 360 rail that I know of, the rest are on clone builds.

Please consider doing a small run of them for the dedicated collectors/clone builders. I bet you could easily sell 2 dozen+ of them. If they were available, you'd get a good amount of FOMO impulse purchases and collectors/clone builders buying multiple rails (1 is none, 2 is 1). These original USO 360 rails are pretty rare and this unique M40A3 variation actually has a cult following in the M40 collecting niche. Collectors/clone builders are just drawn to it, everyone seems to really like this A3 variation for some reason. Maybe it's the oddball parts or it looks really cool or it's just something different in the sea of lookalike A3's or all of those factors combined.

What I can promise you is that if USO made another batch of these M40A3MVP 360 Tactical rails, they would sell out and you'd be making a lot of people very happy! @USO-Josh, I really hope that USO takes this into consideration, and please shoot me a message if you'd like to discuss anything. I can tell you anything you want to know about the M40 collecting community and what clone builders are looking for, whatever I can do to help USO with any information I have and you might need. This is definitely an item that's high up on some people's list, it would be awesome to see a limited edition release of these rare rails!

Aye!

Any updates on the base? Know Chad had a lot going on. No rush

This week has been devoted to wrapping up these buggers, 1st article samples of a billet P90 variant upper receiver. They shipped yesterday so I have that box checked.

I am hoping to start on the bases over the weekend. -It's in the air as of yet. My daughter's car (Infinity SUV) is on the fritz and Denver is the nearest dealership. I've been "volentold" to get it down there for service.

I am hot to trot to get these bases moving. I hope that works for you all.

What's the deal with the top set of screws in the second picture? They don't match the screws below.

Its for a p90. Pic 1 is front of part 2. Pic 3 is different view of same. Pic 2 is rear of part 2. Part 4 (mag) goes between back of part 2.

I get that. I'm just saying that there are countersunk or recessed screws on the whole thing everywhere. And then there's those two screws that look like wood screw heads. Very out of place to me.
