Im about to order a couple blanks to turn some 10/22 barrels for 2 receivers I have that need them. With the extra blank Id like to try and make a new barrel for my MK2. Majority of the machining is easy stuff but that feed ramp gives me pause.

I think I see two options.
1. Machine the barrel and feed ramp as two separate pieces. The feed ramp would have an oversize pin on the back to heat/freeze into an undersize hole in the barrel face. This would allow me to index and head space the barrel and then mark it and drill the hole and install the feed ramp. Only apprehension to this process is that the feed ramp is a very small part and will be hard to hold rigidly and reliably for mill work. Other than that I like this option.

2. Machine the barrel tenon long by the length of the feed ramp. Machine an internal taper on the breech end, at the correct angle to be the feed ramp. Index the barrel in the receiver and mark bottom dead center. Mill the face of the barrel down the length of the feed ramp leaving a stub in the location of the ramp. I like this option too.

Any way that yall see to do it that I have missed? Please dont say "just buy one from Tac-Sol". If I wanted to buy it I would, I want to machine it.

Thanks.

Re: Machining a Ruger MK2 barrel feed ramp

New poster here but have read the forum for several years. I thought this might be an opportunity to pay back a little. Option 2. I did this very thing making a .22 upper using CMMG bolt and a Douglas barrel. I wanted it to fit the upper with the barrel nut but the real problem was the feed ramp. Turned the end like a cone and milled everything but the feedramp. It has worked great with absolutely no problems. Chamber after you have the feed ramp machined. Be very careful with your dimensions and feed angles to match the existing ramp. good luck.
