Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

What length barrel? I can't find the page right now but I seem to remember 2750fps in my AR15 loaded at mag length. But I can't say for sure.

Anyways, suffice to say the 75hpbt will do fine loaded to mag length, especially in a mini which don't tend to be the most precise weapons out there.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

I believe he's referring to the DPMS Mini-SASS AR-15, not the Mini-14.

I don't see a reason why length for an AR would be more restrictive than the 2.26 max oal length usually used. But, I don't own an AR. No issues with 77 gr SMK's in my Mini-14; but unlike most Mini's, mine is an older model with a 1 in 7 twist. I'm assuming the SASS has a 1 in 7 also...

Yes, I am referring to the Mini SASS by DPMS, I believe its an 18 or 20 inch barrel

(not for sure) 1in 8 twist. I'm looking for a load for the 75 BTHP that is seated to magazine feedable length.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

This bullet is made for mag length loading (dont confuse with the Hornady 75 grn AMAX, which is not) Just load for COAL < 2.260" and it will load and feed fine in the AR mag. May want to play safe and set it at 2.250-2.255" Use 24gn of the usual powders for the heavy bullets in .223, such as RL15, Varget, N140, TAC. Set and forget it, I've loaded and shot thousands of 75/77s with such loads in multiple uppers and it has been accurate and reliable for Hipower across the course (at 200 and 300) and IT (at 300, 500, 600)yds. For most hipower shooters, this combo is the closest thing to a "standard" load for NM shooting. Some use it for slow fire prone at 600yd as well. For primers, use Rem 7.5, CCI SRM or BR, avoid the Fed, Win, or Rem 6.6 primers as they are thinner and more likely to pierce. Should deliver about 2700-2750 FPS in 20". Work up your loads, etc, but if this load doesn't shoot, its not the the load...

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

Alot of loads in the 223 with 24 to 24.5 grains of powder will be compressed loads. One of my favorite loads using Varget is compressed. The 75 BTHP is a great bullet if I were going to use RE15 I would start at 23 grs. and work up. Also watch the outside temps using RE15. If you do load work up in the winter things can get dicey in the summer but it is a very good powder for the AR type rifles.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

I started using TAC in my wife's AR for the ball powder metering ability. With the 75 bthp from Hornady, I ended up with a load of 24.3 gr and a CCI 450 with a length of 2.252 and a speed of 2622 ES of 20 and SD of 11. This is out of a 16" Lilja barreled carbine. Shoots 1/2 moa even with the 4X SN4 from US Optics. I'll post target pics later if i can. I normally use Varget or the new 8208, but I like the TAC for the Dillon.

This is the load I used in my bolt action m700 in .223 before I switched to the 75 gr A-Max.

75 gr Hornady BTHP
Lapua brass
Federal match primer
24 grs of RL-15
2.26" coal

2759 fps
ES - 27
SD - 10

Per a buddy's testing info:

18" 1:8tw mini-SASS barrel
LC 09 Brass
Wolf SRmag
75 Horn. BTHP @ 2.255" oal
25.5gr H335 = 2755 fps avg (pressure showing a little)
26.5gr BLC-2 = 2825 fps avg (no pressure, case is FULL)

Both loads shot sub 1" at 100yd, occasionally he's capable of a 0.75" group but I'm not sure which is more limiting, the shooter or the 8.5lb factory gritt-trap trigger.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

Fmedic, that sounds like just what I'm looking for, I'm hoping to work up a load that I can shoot far and hopefully sub MOA. Thanks alot buddy.

Lobo, 2.26 I think will just fit in the mag, what Kind of accuracy did you get from that load? and what barrel length and twist?

Bohem, Thanks, you always have good info. I will give those a try as well.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

No problem. This was with WIN brass by the way. I don't have the info in front of me, but there may be another accurate node around 3% higher. It would probably put another 75 fps over the previous figures.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

So I made it to the range today and shot 22.5, 23, 23.5 grains all seated at 2.55. Very happy with the result, all loads shot well. There was a little vertical stringing, but not too bad. I didn't have time to take the chrono with me, so I'm curious as to what kind of velocity was developed. What MV have you guys been seeing with this load?

I still dont think I'm gonna shitcan the Amax load, after all my testing, I fired the pet load into a three shot group at 100 just to see how it looked. It was roughly .3-.4 inches, I still think I'll keep them around. But I would much rather have a mag fed load that could produce that accuracy and ballistics.

My apologies for such a late response. Somehow I just missed the notice in my email.

With that load, 10 shot groups of less than .75" @ 100 yards are frequent occurances. My barrel is 26" with a 1/8 twist.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

I average 2,462 with 24gr R15 and LC brass out of a 1-7 16". I don't have any groups, but is deadly on Mt. Dew bottles with an Eotech @ 100 yds.

Re: Mag length .223 W/Hornady 75BTHP?

Work up load......with Varget found that 24grs with win brass
205m shoot very well in two ARs and bolt gun 1/9 and 1/8 twist.
The load shoots very well sub group 5 shot...
