MagnetoSpeed Sporter issue

I'm new to MagnetoSpeed (have used a CED Millenium 2 for quite a number of years). So much to love about such a little package, but I'm having an issue - my question is, do these indicate a typical phenomenon with the MS chronos, and if so, is there a well known fix? I double checked my setup a couple of times - the unit is parallel to the bore line, and doesn't appear to be too far away from the path of the bullet (barrel is approx .900" at muzzle).

Basic problem is ... about 30% of my shots read about 1000 fps low. In a group of three, I'll get two reading at something like 2650, 2675, and then the third will read 1690-1700 or so.

I have not yet tried changing the battery (MS says the battery is at 8.4v... it doesn't seem super fresh by "tongue test"), or changing the sensitivity. I'll be trying both things, of course. Just didn't know if it's a no brainer "oh, just change the battery and it'll all work" kind of deal?

I've never experienced that problem with mine but it sounds like one of the sensors is not picking up the bullet on the low velocity shot. I'd re-read the manual and make sure that the MS is positioned within the measurements they list, and also that it is securely attached. If you are running it to close to the barrel or muzzle break you might get a bad reading, if you haven't noticed there is a magnetic on the wand portion. I'd also try changing the sensitivity setting as you said you are going to try. if all that fails I'd give MS a call.
Hopefully this helps some.

Your statement isn't real clear on how close or far away from the bore the unit is. Have you used the indicator rod to set distance from bore and then sighted through the barrel to check? As a reference, the magnetic sensor platform should be 1/8-3/16" from the bore edge. Do you have a picture?

There's no indicator rod included with a Sporter. Sighting through the barrel is only going to tell you if the platform is in danger of being shot? I've used a cleaning rod in the muzzle to verify that the platform is level (as well as you can, given that the cleaning rod isn't exactly a straight edge). I don't have a pic at the moment. I haven't taken a measurement with a ruler to verify, but the barrel is within the sizes they specify (1/2 to 1 inch - mine is .900 at the muzzle), and I'm using the small spacer, and to my eye, it seems to be about 3/16"-ish, and less than 1/4" for sure.

The Sporter isn't quite as slick as the V3 in terms of setup, obviously.

I run my Sporter on the higher sensitivity setting. No issues with bore height or alignment regardless of barrel contour. I've even used it attached to a suppressor and it worked fine.

Sheldon N hit on what I was thinking as well. Play with sensitivity see if that helps.

Typical guy move I strapped it on plugged it in then got pissed I was not getting readings. Read the instructions adjusted sensitivity and it works just fine.

I've had to change the sensitivity so it would read my 22 Creedmoor. However, it simply didn't read and showed no data. Every time I turn it on now it gives me a message that I must click past telling me I'm at a non-default sensitivity setting. It reads everything at one higher level from default, though.

I had some screwy readings the other day with my V3 and realized I was not quite close enough to the bore line. Once I changed the spacers to get it within spec the issue went away. Mine is set on auto sensitivy and I noticed during debrief that it changes between 3 & 2 , so I'm going to just try setting it on 3 for consistency.

I have had my Sporter go down twice with bad LCDs and both times the guys at Magnetospeed sent out a new control unit ASAP and told me to put the old unit in the box and send it back after I got the new unit. By all means do not hesitate to call em. Damn good customer service!

I've had a Magnetospeed V3 for three years now and it has been dead nuts reliable. Don't think it has ever missed a shot. I love it. It's so easy to use.

Start by putting in a NEW battery. That's simple and cheap. Then optimize your spacer stack. If you have a non-metallic cleaning rod, stick that in the bore to help gauge the gap between the bullet and the sensor. Of course, be sure your mounting straps are as tight as you can get them. (The one thing I don't like about MS.) I've never needed to fiddle with the sensitivity settings. I'd treat that as the option of last resort. Good luck!

Mine was a bit finicky in the beginning but once it got into a sweet spot on height and with fresh batteries it works like a charm. If your still having issues i'd suggest you reach out to them.
