Those of you that run manufactured ammo in your AW (26" - .308), what type(s) do you run? I realize that you have to see which runs best in a particular weapon, but I desire to see what MOST have found as consistent in their AWs.... I figure: Federal Gold Match 168, Black Hills 168 Grain Match Hollow Point Boat Tail, Lapua 308 Winchester Ammo 155gr Scenar, but ...

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

Try some Corbon 155 or 175 variety. The 168 SMK tends to die out around 800ish.

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

Nobody serious about long range shooting should get into the habit of using 168gr stuff. While it may work for some, it is far from ideal at distance.

Get into the habit of using 175gr stuff.

Corbon 175, 155

Black Hills 175

Lapua 155, 170

Federal 175

In that order

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

My AIAW 26" didn't shoot anything federal very well. It shot Lapua 155 and BHA 175 the best. The Corbon 155 shot almost as good. It didn't like any flavor of 168. Hand loads shoot the best always but don't load the 168SMKs because they are shit. I'll add that's just my opinion of the 168's for my uses.

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

Hornady just sent out a press release on the new load. It is hitting the market now. Matt Burkett used it last weekend at the AZ TPRC and he was getting 2820fps from a 26" barrel. That's smokin' with a 178 BTHP that has a .530 BC. I have some on order now.

Press release:

Hornady® unveils the next generation of match ammunition - the Superformance™ 308 Win 178 gr BTHP Match. Achieving 2,775 feet per second from a SAAMI spec 24” test barrel, this new load is approximately 175 fps FASTER than any comparable commercial load available today! Topped with the NEW 178 gr BTHP Match bullet featuring a .530 ballistic coefficient, this Superformance™ offering provides industry leading ballistic performance.

"The new 178 grain BTHP Match bullet was purpose built, and optimized specifically for the 308 Winchester chamber. It features an aggressive ogive as well as an extremely efficient boat tail that makes this projectile highly effective aerodynamically, yield less wind drift and allows the shooter to obtain flatter trajectories. Accuracy results were excellent. We shot a .680" group at 200 yards with our test equipment, and field tests out to 1250 yards yielded 8 inch, not 8 MOA, but 8 inch total circumferential groups." – Joe Thielen – Hornady Project Engineer

Remaining supersonic to approximately 1,275 yards, this new load provides a 200 to 250 yard advantage over anything else currently available in 308 Winchester. Because Hornady incorporates its Superformance™ technology, there is no increase in pressure, barrel wear or felt recoil. It also offers incredible temperature stability and excellent accuracy potential.

"When we combine this high B.C. match bullet with our Superformance™ propellants, the result is a completely new load specifically designed to maximize every aspect of the 308 Winchester." – Dave Emary – Hornady Senior Ballistician

LAos with this post on Hornady (which really looks interesting) I will need to add some of that for testing as well.

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

Your welcome.

If you do get to reloading and I suggest you do since there are some "hot shit" bullets for the .308 not offered in a factory loaded flavor, like the 155.5 Bergers and the 2156's doin 2900+ are very, very cool.

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

Do you reload? If so you should try out some 175SMK's over:
45gr Varget
44.5gr Varget
45.3-5gr Varget
If you have a chronograph, go for around 2700fps to see how well it groups. Go a little lower, then a little higher, ie, about 100fps to see if groups tighten or open up. Once you figure which is tightest at 100, move it out to 300 and try again. When you find the tightest 300 group, stick with it because the 175's stabilize at about 300M

Re: Manufactured Ammo for AIAW

Thanks Switchblade, but at this time I do not plan on re-loading. I may decide to later and I am saving the information you provided ....

I think I am going to follow Lowlight's list and try some of the Hornady as well.
