I was watching a show last night on the modern Marine sniper.

Was decent but then they started talking about the rucksack loadout.

Everything from high dollar heavy bino's with a laser rangefinder to the radio's, range calculator, angle estimator - all this stuff that was never used by past snipers that still got their job done...

Do you think we have too much reliance on technology?

Or do they teach the basics so they could shoot and survive without it and it only becomes a luxury?

I liked the commo part, they looked way lighter than a PRC-77 (Think it was a PRC-113 or 9?) - obviously commo is critical.

One of the Sgt's made a comment about "The days of going out with a rifle and a few john wayne crackers is over"........

It did show the M40A5 however, so it was impressive..

caught that and 3 other sniper documentaries "on demand" with comcast. don't know if it's still available "on demand", but was originally on the military channel.

i do believe they also eluded that using technology to better accomplish the mission and survivorbility of the team is employed (and should be), but also teaching, packing the basics for when that technology fails.

the "crackers" are still there...for when the technology fails.

This is one of my most favorite quotes of all time!!

Thank you Lindy for bringing us back on point.

Believe me they still teach the basics. When going through school you do not have access to any of the rangefinders or any other high speed shit. Actually, Im briefly interviewed in that show, and my quote has something to do with mastering the basics.

Once you get to the fleet you do have more access to the gear which makes you more effective at your job. We have capabilities now that snipers in other eras did not have. Technology aids us, and as long as we dont lose the basic skills, I dont think its a problem at all.
