I have $1200 to spend on a scope for my new custom build by Short Action Customs. Both are in my price range. Which one is the better scope and value? I have not looked through or used either but hear both are a good choice...

I don't care for the TMR reticle, some do but I don't. I don't like the opening hole in the middle of the crosshairs for shooting benchrest type groups...I'd go Mildot then on the Leupold. As you asked the question...SS. If you changed to Mildot on Leupold then the Mark 4 would get the nod as I like the 5x greater power available at the top end.

Chad,

The scopes are quite different functionally in that one is SFP the other is FFP, so the first question you need to answer is which do you want? If SFP, that rules out the SS off the bat. If FFP, the more comparable Leupold would be the ER/T with the FFP TMR. This scope will be more expensive and won't have illumination. So the next question is do you really need illumination? The SS is available either way so if you don't need it you can save some money.

Thanks for the replies. I think that I really dont want a FFP scope, i like the reticle to remain a constant size, bc ive heard it can blur a bit when at a higher magn. The TMR reticle looks like it will suit me well doing 6-800 yd target shooting. The real question that i have is the clarity of the glass and the overall quality of each. Which is tougher and will give me the best sight picture at high magnification. thx

I haven't used the 4.5-14 but I have used the 6.5-20 mk4 and honestly I thought it was a joke compared to the ss 5-20's glass. I find the ss 5-20's eye box to be one of the best, its just as good or better than my razor 5-20. Maybe take a look at the Bushnell HDMR? If you haven't tried an FFP scope I'd suggest picking up a used ss 5-20 or bushnell HDMR on the hide, try it for a while, if you don't like just resell it for around what you got it for.
