If things go truly Sarajevo... there will be no property taxes. Or mortgages. Or student loan debt. Or cars to buy, because there will be noone making them.
Again, not wishing this on anyone or hoping for it. But this is how extreme social division ends up. And it's not fought by domestic terrorists. It's fought by people protecting hearth and home.
We've been living in an historical sweet spot since 1945... Most of the world, in fact, except for minor flare-ups. Pax Americana and 'Detente' are the two roots. The result has been the greatest period of progress and prosperity ever or, perhaps, since the Victorian Age. Which ended during the brief Edwardian period in a Conflagration that really didn't end until 1945. (One has to discount China and the FUSSR... which remained in a genocidal dark age until, well, still. Thanks Communism. You know, True Socialism that hasn't really been tried yet?)
Going close to 100 years without a major superpower war is unusual.
Again, look at history in the US... 1770's, a ruling elite keeping motivated Colonists who were waking up to their "Americanism" from expanding into the frontier or pursuing their economic interests outside a colonial system. All overlorded by a feckless government in a distant and out-of-touch capitol lorded over by an idiot-king (he was.) Conflagration. 1860... A bifurcated economy driven by tensions over 'woke' anti-slavery forces and a Southern economic system that depended utterly on slavery and indentured labor... ruled over by a distant capitol with an utterly idiotic and feckless president named James Buchanan who egged on North/South violence, especially along the Kansas/Missouri border while, basically, being out-of-touch dithering, career-politician, lawyer. And probably a peter-puffer. His 'lame duck' period makes Xiden look positively dreamy.
Remember that in August 1914, Britain and Germany were among the two most prosporous countries on the planet... and they were each other's biggest trading partners. Politicians and, moreover, bureaucracies do not make rational decisions, especially if their ego's and power are threatened. They lash out. And they do it with other people's lives and children...
I remain the world's greatest optimist. But as both a trained historian and futurist... things do not look good. The system designed by the founders can work and get past this. Things were bad in the '30's. And the '60's. And the late '70's to a degree. But if someone throws a monkey wrench in the wheels that make the republic work (and I think they are trying to) then all bets are off.
