Years ago i bought several thousand match bullets pn 8595434. I thought they were 172 gr, i put some on my new Lyman scale and found them to be between 174-179 gr. Is this normal? or should i weigh them again on another flat surface? I also did some 175 sierra match and they were on the money.

Re: match bullets military

M118 match bullets are referred to as 173s but they range to 179 grain. this is because they come from four bullet machine lines and are all mixed together.
Terry's pic is just right for selecting the best of the best except on 173s the exposed lead on the bottom of the best is tucked up inside base of jacket below the roll and vary all the way to the other end just like Terry's picture.
Now if you think that is bad they can vary from .308 to .3089 diameter.
Bottom line is you segregate by base then diameter and separate these in say 2/10ths grain variations.
There is good news. The jackets are very hard on these bullets and thusly will overlook barrel problems (like barrel going out) that a Sierra/Hornady match bullet won't due to their soft precision jackets.

Acceptance on Match ammo is 3.5" at 600 yards. This is not extreme spread but based on a convuluted formula. Extreme spread is like 11" for this ammo. Be advised there were lots of waivers granted so you can find 13" ammo as well.

Ammo test was fired from 1903 actions, heavy Mann barrels from FA mounts, not M1, M14 etc. so this ammo in those rifles will give larger groups.

These 173s (or what ever they weigh) do have thier place. I have 2-3000 that were pulled to make Mexican Match when I ran the AKGN Marksmanship unit. Yeap, they are all over the place in weight and accuracy.

I'd never shoot a match with them, but they are great for Off Hand Practice at 100 yard Reduced HP targets. Also I built my 12 year old Grandson a 308 for hunting. I reduced the rounds to his rifle to about 2000 feet per sec so he will learn to shoot instead of flinch. I really dont think, at this stage, he could tell the differance between the mil 173s and 175 SMKs, but my pocket book can.

If you got them, hang on to them, but spend the money for quality bullets for matches or serious shooting.
