McMillan A6 Stock Users - Question

Gents,

I had a Kelbly built on a painted/adjustable McMillan A6, and recently took possession of it. Everything looks/works great, however the stock feels unlike any other McMillan fiberglass stock I own.

That said, it feels like there's excessive flex in the stock compared to the A5s that I have. When I press down on the barrel, I can easily move it over .25" downwards towards in the barrel channel. It almost flexes like I'd expect a 'composite' stock to; maybe a little stiffer, but definitely not like a standard fill fiberglass stock that I'm used to.

I got this A6 from their retail store in their 4th of july sale; the stock alone was 899, so I know it's not some MC3 version of the A6. As I recall it was just a standard short action 700 stock; no special notes on fill or materials. Unfortunately, the receipt doesn't list every detail of the stock as it wasn't a custom order.

I've got a match coming up this weekend, but afterwards will be calling McMillan.

My question to any A6 stock users out there, do yours feel like this? Was there some kind of change in the A6s, or does this sound like a stock that was built with a lighter fill?

I suspect I'm probably screwed either way, because the stock had to be relieved for the action/trigger hanger.

Well, I took everything apart and I can't figure it out. Separated the stock and it's stiff as hell on it's own; I'm 6'4" 230 and I can't get it to flex using all my strength. The stock has pillars installed, and is glass bedded on top of that. Screw torque was 35 in-lbs on both screws; I ran it all the way up to 60 in-lbs with no change.

It's not the barrel or the action flexing either; the barrel is a 30" heavy varmint contour.

That said, if you grab the fore-end of the stock and barrel with a single hand, you can compress the barrel to touch the barrel channel with little effort.

I'm guessing with the leverage of the barrel it makes it easier to flex the rearward portion of the stock? Not sure.

I have 2 McM A5s with 30" heavy varmints on them, and neither of them act this way.

Regarding weight, I didn't put it on a scale, but I'd guess the stock is 3-4lbs. I will say it doesn't feel like my other mcmillans, or others I've shot, but that could be because it's a thick textured finish.

I checked McMillan's site, and it doesn't look like they've ever offered an A6 in a MC3 config so I'm stumped.

I guess just a lighter fill?

A 30" heavy barrel can easily flex 1/4" along the full length.

That said, if the stock isn't flexing, my next item would be to make sure that the action screws are torqued properly. If so, and if the gun shoots well, don't worry about it and enjoy your badass new toy!
