I wanna add some material to the pistol grip area of my McMillan A-3 to make it fit my hand better. It's just too narrow. Anyone ever done anything like this or could point me in the right direction? Thanks guys.

Re: Modifying the A-3 Grip?

My suggestion would be to drill some holes in the grip itself or put a couple of screws into it to give an attaching point and then use some JB Stick, its a two part epoxy that you simply mix in your hands and then you can put it on the grip and mold to whatever shape you want. Ive used it to build up a couple of grips to fit the way I want them to. Its about 5 bucks and one stick is enough to do a grip with ease. You can smooth it out with a wet finger once youve put it on. It takes about 10 minutes or so to harden and set up to where you can file, sand, do whatever, and fully hardens in 24 hours.

Where can I get Devcon? I've never attempted anything like this before, I have pretty good hand/mechanical skills. Is drilling the the stock really necessary? I don't want to compromise the strength of the stock.

Re: Modifying the A-3 Grip?

Pachmayr makes a product called Pac Skin that might be one option to look at, either direct application, or over the top of something like Devcon. This will provide a softgrip overlay for comfort, and will also provide some size increase. Here is a link...

Re: Modifying the A-3 Grip?

I had the same trouble when I started running the A series Mac stocks. My answer was duct tape and closed cell foam until I got to the point that I didn't need it any more. I found my grip and position changed so that it was comfortable in it's original configuration after I figured out the stock.

It wasn't pretty but it worked

Re: Modifying the A-3 Grip?

I wouldnt drill deep into the grip, just enough for the JB to get a drip to help it adhere better.

Thats also why I suggested the screws, the JB will form around the head and keep it from coming off

Re: Modifying the A-3 Grip?

you can do this a few ways. I'd suggest getting some blue foam sheets from the hardware store and build up as needed, sand and wrap in fiberglass and resin.

You can also use EPP, EPS, Depron foams from the local hobby shop (may have to order it)

Or, instead of blue foam, use the spray foam from. Once it sets, shape as needed and wrap in fiberglass and resin.
