True words from a GREAT American. He understood before many of us did. Some of the weapons he asked about got him the nick name of Ronny Ray-Gun from those of us who worked for contractors for the military, and government labs. He will be remembered even by his political enemy's, as a truly great American. I wish we had someone like him or John Wayne in our presence today.

Mr. Reagan's character delineates the very real difference between statesmen and politicians. When we have statesmen at the helm, we have a Nation with a purpose. When the politicians lead, we have something rather less desirable.

SledDog: You should read Doulas Brinkley's book "The Boys of Point DuHoc." It is the story of the Rangers assault... and the speech Reagan gave on June 6, 1984... It was one if his most brilliant speeches ever, written by a very young Peggy Noonan. It was her first speech as a Reagan speechwriter and it firmly cemented her status as one of the great speechwriters of all time.

Browse Inside The Boys of Pointe du Hoc: Ronald Reagan, D-Day, and the U.S. Army 2nd Ranger Battalion by Douglas Brinkley

I can't say enough about this book for those who have an interest in D-Day history, the Rangers or even want to read how the speechwriting process works. Moreover, Brinkley is a very good historian with a highly-readable style.

Ok, "This Day in History" lesson done. Feel free to go back to pictures of mammalian protruberances.

One of my former coworkers parked his BMW 530 diagonally across 2 parking spaces one morning so I of course parked my old Dodge about 4" from his drivers door and following my lead another coworker parked his car about 4" from the BMW's passenger door.

Not on the same scale as the Asian vid, but it inspires me:

A couple years ago a friend of a friend was stationed at "the great place", and somewhere up the line of his command a decision was made to not allow him to ride his bike anymore. He commuted quite a way to get his family out of that town (it's the murder capital of Texas), and his bike was the only way he could afford the commute. Anyway, I found out through our mutual friend that he had begun sleeping in a borrowed truck in the parking lot M-Th, and driving home on Fri. I didn't know the guy well, had only run into him a few times, but couldn't ignore the bad situation. My philosophy is that things get brought to you for a reason, so I prayed about it and decided to open my home to him. He was too proud to ever spend more than two nights a week, but free room and board was on the table.
Fast forward a few years. I'm moving, and had several guys say that they would come and help and then they all backed out or didn't call back, all but one. The soldier who was a friend of a friend is now my best friend and has been busting his ass to help in any way he can every step of the way.

In a career where I listen to people's nightmares all day it is inspiring to me that while I never expect it, a simple kind gesture can be reciprocated or paid forward.
 
Every day I try to give more than I get. I get plenty, and I am very fortunate, but it means nothing to me without being to help someone who could use a hand.

"Feed your horses, feed your men, feed yourself. Every moment of every day give 100% of all that you have to the troops. And an amazing thing will happen. While you sleep, God will give you back everything you gave and more. Until the day comes that no matter how hard you try and how much you give, they will give you more than you deserve or can ever repay them for. And you will come to know that the giving is the most precious thing you ever did."

And, it came to pass just like that.

I'd like to see this thread go more that way, and have less of the T&A posts, which by the way, do actually exist elsewhere on the Internet.... despite the rumors.
 
A young man came into my life when he was 16 years old. He at the time was my Daughters Boyfriend.

He had a real scummy mother and her boyfriend caused him all kinds of problems. The Young mans goal was to finish High School so he could join the Navy. His mothers boyfriend was always trying to get hime to fight so he could call the cops and ruin his chance to join the Navy.
He spent the weekend at our house and as he was being taken home he said things were going to be bad for him and my Wife told him that if he got kicked out to call us.

Well he got kicked out. So I told him that I would give him a place to live if he finished School and joined the Navy. I believe he has paid me back he was up for Sailor of the month several times and was one of the youngest E5 in the Navy. He has since changed his last name to mine and has given me three wonderful Grandchildren.

Sometimes you are paid back for what you do.

I don't know about that. The pictures at the end of the video have me wondering if it is a true story.

I would lean to the side of a made up story. I will say it is plausible that it real, but those pictures can be faked. Heck look at all the movies and TV shows with fake pictures. Who ever produced that video put forth plenty of time and effort, even for a few minute video, so I doubt that they would have over looked that, knowing it would help add to the plot.

Reminds me of an Olympic marathon some years ago...
Everyone else had entered the stadium and finished hours ago, but one runner was still on the course. Whupped tired, stopping to rest now and then when he couldn't go on.
But he was determined to finish.
The officials closed the stadium, and started laying down the tarps and things for the closing ceremonies, and a group of other runners persuaded them to open the gate, and wait until this guy finished.
A few of them even went back along the course, to encourage him.
Finally, practically staggering into the stadium, he came in, to the cheers of a bunch of other runners and the few workers and spectators that were there.
He crossed the finish line something like 5 hours after the next-to-last finisher... but by god, he finished, and he crossed the finish line!

One day, when I'm not so lazy, I'll google and see if I can figure out when, and who, that was... I think early 90's.
Watching that motivated me... this guy DID NOT QUIT. He was dead last, but he didn't quit.

Hmm...Rand was one that advocated for reason. And value follows from that as a free exchange. That results in mutual benefit. I would say that there are CEO's that subscribe to the ideology of their benefit alone, and they seldom value their workers or even their customers.

The Dairy Queen kid...look at that... Value. He recognized the value of a customer, a good customer, his customer. The mutual benefit there is strengthened. The other customer...asked to leave. I'm not answering for Rand, can anyone anymore...but it does follow from her philosophy.
 
Just rolled over 200,000 relatively trouble free miles on mine. I put over 243,000 miles on my last one. How many miles you have on your whatever?


392000 , 2001 Dodge 2500 5.9 HO 6 Speed, Quad Cab 4x4 ..... couple of inj. pumps, radiator and the usually replaced parts. 0.3 on it when I picked it up from the dealer. Still going strong.
