You can dip your pen in company ink. Just don't use your signature!

Unfortunately, a co-worker at this very company did not learn that lesson, and paid for it with their job. Well, one of the reasons....

This person was the mainframe computer "operator" on the 2nd shift (5pm - Mid.). But he wasn't very good. He would do things like leave "write rings" on a reel of computer tape (a "write ring" was a plastic ring you inserted inside the back of a computer tape reel to permit the tape to be "overwritten." If the ring was not inserted, the mainframe would not write over the tape and would give an error indicating that it wasn't in place). One never put a write ring on a tape unless you were 100% certain the tape was to be overwritten. This operator could never remember which way was which... and would put write rings on tapes that should never have them in place. And he'd swear he was correct in their placement. WRONG!

I would often be there late at night doing some programming work, and I watched this guy. He would disappear for hours at a time away from the computer room. It turns out there was also a young girl there from Poland who was hired as part of the contract staff that did office cleaning at night after everyone left for the day. As nice/sweet as she could be... and extremely smart... She had no business being an office cleaner. She could do way better than that. She just didn't speak sufficient English to find a better job. If you remember the ER episode called "Blizzard," where "Bob" the cleaner in the ER was actually a cardiovascular surgeon in Poland but didn't speak enough English to pass the board certification exams, it was the exact same situation.

Subsequently, I discovered that she, also, would disappear for hours at a time. I'm sure you can guess where this is going. Our friend, Mr. "Write ring" was banging this poor girl like crazy and "on site" of all things. Perhaps, she thought he'd help her with English or whatever. I dunno, But, eventually, they were caught, somehow. I never saw them "active" so I could never say but, eventually, they were caught. And both were terminated for cause. It sucks. That girl was really nice and didn't deserve that. And all of this was well prior to the "workplace harassment" movement that would follow suit.

Don't dip your pen in company ink.

Just found that ER Scene where "Bob" saves the life of a man and fears it will be her end.... but it isn't. I'll admit this is my favorite ER Episode. I know for most people it's "Loves Labour Lost." But for me, it's "Blizzard" and for the reason below.
