Did you know that Henry Ford bought and operated a coal mine there? He wanted the coal to power his plants. However he didn't take into account the high cost of transporting the coal. He thought he could buy the railroad but it wasn't for sale and he closed the mine after some time. It's amazing to see the operation. The mine opening is high on a ridge, however he had to get the coal down below to the railroad tracks. So he invented a conveyor belt system to do that. If you ever have the time, take that tour.

Been there. If I think about it for 30 seconds I will cry.
I've had numerous opportunities to go to some of the camps. I can't. It just seems very macabre and terribly disrespectful to do something like that. My opinion only, not judging others (well maybe the big assed glamour gal). I work for the US subsidiary of a German power electronics manufacturer, headquarted in Nurnberg. I feel very sorry for the younger Germans (everybody is younger to me) because they have to go through a tremendous amount of indoctrination in the education system as to the evil and the shame they should feel. I feel sorry for them because most of them were born well after the atrocities occurred.
I have visited Dachau and Bergen-Belsen (sp?)
Very moving experiences.
My current secretary is from Hamburg area. A youngin' for sure and has filled me in on how they educated regarding WWII. Very sad.

@Threadcutter308 - I visited with my ex wife when visiting her family in Poland.
It was a big deal to her to visit some of the camps, as her great grandfather was a camp survivor of Treblinka, north east of Warsaw.
He testified at Nuremberg. He was there almost 5 yrs before liberation.
I think she needed to feel and see it.
I watched an older Isreali lady be walked through the gates of Birkeneu.
Flanked on either side by big men, each with significant insignia. 3 stars on the lapel, what that means in IDF I dont know.
From what I got, she was a child survivor. They sent her and a bunch of troops back and walked her through the gate.
Fuck the Nazis.

I can understand how that would be a soul cleansing experience, providing closure for some to the absolutey horrific nightmare of that time.
