I am new to the idea of medium and long distance shooting. I would like to try this part of the shooting sport out and am laboring under the decision process of what type of scope to buy first. Reading many of the stickies and relative posts has lead me to the following idea.
Given the respective pros and cons with variable power front and rear focal plane reticles, added expense and drop in reliability for variable scopes I have begun to believe that a fixed 10x or 14x or 16x might be the "bees knees" for a beginner......if one would add a small red dot to the package. I envision a Burris Fast Fire or Doctor or Aim type red dot fixed to the scope tube and canted at 45 degrees as done on many AR-15 set-ups. With this package I believe one would have the benefits of a simple dependable fixed high power scope for medium to long range shooting and a fall back short range red dot for shorter distance shots.

What do you all think?

10x for beginner.
skip the red dot unless youre doing 3 gun.

i know the urge to get the perfect kit from the start, but start coarse and evaluate your needs, then worry about the fine details.

sorry for assuming youre new at this, low post count is a dead giveaway.
but kudos on using the search button first (they can be taught!)

No harm, no foul. I am so new to this idea of med/ long range shooting that I haven't purchased my first mil dot scope. After several weeks of reading the stickies and using the search function on this and dare I mention other sites...I had come to the conclusions in my lead post.
I had decided that a fixed 10x would greatly help simplify things for someone new to the sport I just couldn't reconcile the closer in shooting if my interest took me there.

Thanks for the advice.

i used burris extreme tactical rings and burris offers an item that replaces the saddle (top part) of one of the rings. milled on top is a short length of rail so you can attach a small secondary optic like you want to do. its not expensive and if you are going to do it you may as well do it from the start. i have the part but still dont have a red dot yet.

I just mounted a J-Point on top of the 2x-7x Burris on my 9644 for hunting hogs in cedar brakes and I am sold on the concept. With a SF 9P mounted to the barrel it is perfect for night hunting hogs.
