watching Generation Kill last nite, it quickly hit me that their MRE's were NOT the MRE's I remember. Save for the tubes of peanut butter caulk, but I never had the Japs and Cheese packet...

I'm preparing (slowly) for a hunt in SD in 2011 with my uncles and food is something I really don't want to worry about much. I plan on putting a box of MRE's in the car and taking 1-2 inthe field with me as needed. But I have NO clue what they are like any more.

What meals taste good these days?

last batch I had, the veggie burger came with this awesome brownie...tasted like a real brownie.

There are some good ones now but I'll never forgive them for screwing up the spaghetti.

During Katrina, I was assigned to a truck to offload cases to of MRE's to whoever wanted them. Needless to say, at the end of the day there were still a bunch of cases left in the truck. I took a case of each (menu A/B) home, and ate them throughout the month. The chilli-mac was okay, as was the beef raviolli. I like the chicken in thai sauce...(looks like somebody already ate it). I didn't eat the veggie burger, but there were either M&M's or skittles in the package. I have always said it, but when you're hungry, a deep fried dog turd would taste good.

Re: MRE's...any good ones in the latest batches?

I think the problem i'm gonna have with MRE's is my current nutritional requirements and problems associated with my gastric bypsass surgery. Me and sugar don't get along well at all. so if the carbs are ultra high, it's a no go for me. I can manage about 20g of sugars and about 40g of carbs (noodles, no rice) per meal, beyond that I might as well curl up in a quiet place and wish for Grimmy to come by with his scythe for a while.

I'm wondering if MRE's are even the way to go anymore. Usually these days I keep some SBD protein crunch bars on hand, they do well save for the voluminous gas they produce. I'm big on high protein meals, and seem to remember stuff like the meatloaf, freeze dried burger patty, even the hot dogs were edible....

If you can't have a lot of carbs, then I don't think MRE's are what you are looking for. What about Mountain House meals or other backpacking meals? How long do you plan on being gone? For about the same weight, you could take along a couple cans of soup.

If you have had a Gastric Bypass then MRE's are definitely not for you . Your gonna want High Quality protiens and nutritional supplements . I would venture a guess that Jerked meats (Beef , Turkey or whatever) , Protein bars and quality protein shake mixes along with whatever vitamins you take are gonna serve you better and be just as portable .

Not sure if the ones I have are the "new" ones you are asking about. The cheese tortellini were pretty damn good. As was the chicken with noodles, beef stew. If you look at past years of the menu list. The good flavors seem to stick around. Pretty much like the ones I listed above. Make sure you get the heaters. All the new ones should have them. But, when hunting in the cold, a warm MRE is much better than a cold one.

True Michael, but at this point in my surgery, i'm able to eat most anything, i just have to make sure I get my protein in. I do pack along alot of jerky - I go thru a couple deer a year in jerky alone. My dehydrator gets a workout, that's for certain. I'm not much on the shakes, as you have to consume them in full immediately after mixing because the protein breaks down over time. anything not drunk in a half hour is basically flavored water (according to my NUT). I do have to keep up with my vitamins, and I always have bars handy...but sometimes you want a MEAL. that's the reason I was leaning towards MRE's...but after looking at them again it's just A)too much food, B)horrible fat/carb/protein profile C)alot of bulk food which i don't need/can't have

I may indeed have to resort to packing and creating my own meals. cooked beans that have been dried work well, and I can make soup base from homemade soup with the dehydrator and some fruit leather inserts for the dehyd. I might try to make powdered eggs too and see how they come out, the mountain house ones are pretty fawkin gross if you ask me. Cheese travels well too, and is a good source of fat and protein for me.

Oh well, I guess i'm oscar hotel on this thread - feel free to swap your favorite MRE flavors amongst yourselves LOL

Re: MRE's...any good ones in the latest batches?

MRE's are designed to bulk people up to deal with rapid and prolonged calorie loss in a combat or field training situation...Not particularly for civilian consumption.

They taste alright when you are super hungry...thats about it.

I've seen Iraqi dogs turn their noses up at the breakfast meal they recently reintroduced if that's an indication of how good they are. hahhahah

Re: MRE's...any good ones in the latest batches?

I find all of them to be alright except for two. If all I have to eat is Beef Patty and Veggie Omlette I usually skip chow. Both just smell like a bad egg fart to me.

Jambalaya, Beef tips w/mushrooms, and Chick Tetrazini are my favorites.

Re: MRE's...any good ones in the latest batches?

Sounds like they are a long way from dehydrated beef patties,or dehydrated pork patties. Not even a chicken loaf.
But hey we had a lot of fun with the old heat tabs.
Now there was some good breathing, sucking in those fumes.
