I'm in the same boat. I'd love to get some advice on what a beginner with little equipment should buy and gather up to bring to the match.
I'm super stoked about making it in this year! Can't wait! </div></div>
I had the pleasure of shooting it last year as a RO and it was my first PR competition course. I literally brought out every article of shooting paraphernalia I thought I might need for shooting and spotting and used very little of it. When I really gave my gear a hard look after the shooting was done, the gear in the NEED column was pretty sparse.
There is plenty of kit that you can bring to make life easier, but the absolutely required gear is probably something like this:
1. A rifle and ammo that you really trust and can use comfortably in any position.
2. A reliable scope that you can make adjustments with.
3. A bipod or ruck to shoot off of.
4. A way to carry your DOPE either attached to your rifle or your person.
5. A way to carry at least 20 rounds at a time where its very easy to get to for reloads during stages.
6. A range finder that can reliably range out to at least 600 yards (1k would be best)
7. Some way to carry 100-200 rounds of rifle and a couple mags of pistol between stages.
8. A rear bag.
These are just the things that I personally needed in the course of fire. You can throw a lot of money at this kind of thing (I know I have), but the reality is you can shoot every stage of this competition with nothing but a rifle, ruck, ammo, and range finder. And if you're a jedi master that can mil range targets fast enough, you don't even need the LRF.
Disclaimer: These are just my personal observations pertaining to last years competition. YMMV. Also this in no way reflects the official recommended gear list that may be posted for this years competition.
