New York City will have to pay out $180,000 to three Muslim women after forcing them to take off their hijabs for mugshots.

Three lawsuits were settled Monday in Brooklyn federal court stemming from the NYPD policy of photographing people wearing religious head coverings, the New York Daily News reported. The three women settled for $60,000 each.

When is the last time getting arrested for fighting kept the lights on at your place for decades?

ill have to keep this in mind if i ever get arrested.........just cry "religious persecution" ......either my mugshot will be useless, or ill get a fat check from the Govt......its a win win.

although i find the irony of the situation fabulous.......they are being "persecuted" by being forced to remove a garment designed to persecute them.

One day none of your friends will think you're a bit nutty for carrying the transgender female muslim outfit in your EDC bag, because they all have them, too.

Sounds like a business opportunity.

I just read that story, and from my humble perspective, am sick to my stomach at how far we've slid. No, you're taking it off alright. WAC's n RCW's should address this clearer so we can put a halt to the frivolous/ridiculous payouts people get when 'offended' on ANY level within the confines of Club Med. They clearly stated why it went down like it went down regarding the photo op. That shoulda been the end of it. But no, let's dip in the risk pool for 'this'. Amazing.

The real problem is that by paying out money to women who had their hijab's removed, the agency has set a precedent. Now, the agency will be in the position of either yielding to anyone who doesn't want to remove clothing, or jewelry (such as a Sikh) or paying retribution money to them.

I used to work for an agency that allowed a minority employee who falsified official records on a number of occasions to keep his job. Once county attorney's found out, they went nuts, and told my agency that now, the agency had to treat any other employee who does that, or lesser offenses with the same kid gloves, and that it would be damned near impossible to discipline employees. The minority employee falsified records on about 4 different occasions before the agency even put an official written reprimand in his file...he never even received time off with pay.

Once a precedent is set, an agency really screws themselves in regards to what they can do in the future.
