Muzzle brake suggestions?

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

Got a BO FTE on mine. The recoil is less than shooting my friend's 308 without brake. The brake is NOT going to make any new friends for you at the range, because it's loud. It's a good way to drive away those pesky neighbors.

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

If you block the path of the sound between brake and ear, it helps quite a bit. I competed next to a friend shooting a braked .338LM, who placed his rigid case alongside his rifle between us, and it made a significant difference (before the brake blew it over). I wonder if some concrete blocks stood on end in a line might serve the same purpose a bit more successfully.

+1 FTE's are effective and easy to maintain...

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

My friend's .308 has the Badger Thruster on it that is contoured to the barrel diameter. Looks great and works great.

I had thought about doing that as well for a Savage build I'm planning, but since the barrel can be removed and reinstalled, the "timing" of the brake may differ each time, albeit not by much. In this case the FTE or other clamp on brakes that is not fixed may be the ticket. Vais type can also work but then you have dust blowing in your face when shooting prone so no good.

FTE or Roedale.

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

I have an Opsinc on my 300WM.... Really tames down the recoil and i like the look but you better make sure no one is beside you or they won't be too happy with their ears ringing.......

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

just a quick question about that fte removable brake.Does it really require a gunsmith to properly fit it like they say? I dont know much about these at all other then what there for but it doesnt seem like something that just clamps on would need a gunsmith?

I like the FTE

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

I have a Vais, (280AI) my two buddies have a Vais (7mm & 300WM). We love em! Tim is pretty sure he's puttin one on his "eargesplittenloudenboomer" .25-378. Rick's 300Winnie feels like Tina's 7-08. Kinda kicks up a little dust prone, but is Sahweeeeeettt! in the recoil reduction dept. my .02

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

Forgot to mention (JD & Coke is kickin in!) that the Vais are VERY quiet compared to some I've been around. And I can take it off by hand. Contours perfectly w/ my bbbl. and looks good to boot! Adds about 2" to length. Good luck w/ whatever you go with.

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

The FTE brake requires a threaded barrel, and a turned down shoulder behind the thread that is smaller than the diameter of the barrel for the rest of the brake to clamp onto. That is why the install requires a gunsmith or a machinist who knows what he/she is doing.

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

As SocalPete said, the FTE needs to be installed by a competent gunsmith. The clamp part of the brake dose not hold the brake on the barrel, nor is it intended too. One of the features I like about the FTE is the threads are not timed like other brakes are.Removal for cleaning and reinstalling it is simple. Loosen the clamp unscrew it. Screw it back on, level it, tighten the clamp. This is what your barrel will look like when it has been installed properly.

Re: Muzzle brake suggestions?

VMan,

The Roedale brake works very well.

I had a C21 clamp on model that I used on my 700 in .308 and it was very effective - not that a .308 needed it. I had purchased mine as part of the Group buy. Of course right after I ordered, I decided to finally get around to completing the process to order a suppressor - which removed my use for the brake and sold it to another user here.
